These remind me of the "Saxaphone" by Koch, and later "Saxonette" and "Hohner Sax" by Hohner. I've never held one but they appear to have a reed for each key that run lengthwise along the body.

Image is being dodgy, this should work.

Here's the Hohner one I referred to. Looks like it's called an "organette" http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/antique-hohner-organette-brass-blow-149221820

They also made this rather familiar looking instrument

There's a leaf from the Fort Dearborn Watch & Clock Co. Catalog, Chicago, Il., 1907 for sale on eBay at the moment (http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Catalog-Page-Ad-Violins-Clariophone-Flute-Accordion-Zithers-German-Italian-1907-/151188496599?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item23338960d7) with a Clariophone advertised (bottom right) on the reverse of it;

But Philippe-Auguste Kayser's piano-éolien of 1829 must surely have been the earliest melodica?

Pat Missin's information on mouth-blown free reeds is here.

And here's some Hohners:
