1930s photo of irish box player
« on: June 18, 2013, 08:54:12 AM »

Thought you might enjoy the 7th  photo in this series, captioned "Claddagh interior in County Galway circa 1930". Looks like he's playing the Hohner on the outside row. [Sorry I can't point directly to the photo, so you're confronted by an 1892 nude in the first image]

Looks like he's playing the Hohner on the outside row.

With an oil lamp for light it would have required a long exposure, so I doubt that he is actually playing.

Agree about her "long exposure", but I can't see any oil lamp  ::)

Nice highlighting of the technical photographic impediments of the age...

While he may not be actually playing, he does have the "box face" completely nailed...

I suppose the photo at least tells us that 2-row Hohners were around Co. Galway in the 1930s and they were considered by some to be an instrument played by the stereotypical 'rustic peasantry' of the time.

I'm positive the photo is actually lit by a flashbulb hidden below the lamp. Most of the light is coming from the floor in the foreground.

Just what I was thinking - it's interesting to see that some aspects of melodeon-playing transcend boundaries of time and place. (Note to self: avoid playing anywhere with knee-level lighting, it'll make you look even scarier than normal!)

I bet he was not worried if he was playing in the  correct key or not. ;)
