Poll: Tune of the Month for July 2013
« on: June 24, 2013, 11:50:57 PM »

Hi Folks - here we go again!  (:)

With Naragonia back in the UK, let's try again with Pascale Rubens' Le Lac de St-Croix - narrow runner up last time. We have a video of it too, here played by our own docEdock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5jAyyZFOyE

... and we can fill the rest with tunes that narrowly avoided winning a few months/years back:

First up, let's try this: Walter Bulwer's Polka No.2, here played by Ed Rennie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E65vHX-5xcU

... and this: Mr Beveridge's Maggot, which you can find a nice discussion about (including ABC, and a link to LDT's melodeon video) here: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,6924.msg86381.html#msg86381 . I also found myself intranced by this lovely concertina version by ProfRat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHw2xeGtBo8

and finally, Soldier's Joy: here it is as you'd hear it in most sessions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Sme1bst8oI ... and this is how DTN plays it: http://soundcloud.com/dtn-1/soldiers-joy . A tune you can do a *lot* with.

Off you go folks - happy voting!

Cheers,

Clive

Here's Le lac de St-Croix in D if you don't have a C/F box and you'll have to fudge the F#m7 if you don't have 12 basses. Great tune but I find it very hard to keep going . . .

Just an extra little bit of info little about the above abc, that may be as it written in the Naragonia Tune Book but on the Youtube of the tune Pascale Rubens playe one bar slightly differently. Third bar of the B music (third line, third bar) is written as:

"Dmaj7"z2F[d2f2]F[d2f2]F| but in fact she plays:

"Dmaj7"z2F[d2f2]F[c2e2]F| and it make a noticeable difference!

Been working on Mr beveridges this morning...its sounding better than it used to...the crossrowing isn't as clunky combined with the cords.

I also found myself entranced by this lovely concertina version by ProfRat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHw2xeGtBo8

Danny Chapman is a remarkable musician and a great melodeon player on both 'quint' boxes (they're a forth apart dammit!) and semitone boxes (check out the Kesh Jig on his Youtube channel). Here he is playing both melodeon and his first instrument, the cello. What a pity he didn't submit The Ash Grove for TOTM.

Quint/fourth is 5 semitones. (:)

Quint/fourth is 5 semitones. (:)

Fourth and fifth refer to degrees of the scale and have nothing at all to do with semitones. If D is the lower note then it's relationship to G is a fourth ie DEFGABCD. Very basic and indisputable musical theory. If the box was a G/D then guess what? GABCDEFG it would indeed be a quint box.

I'm a quad man meself.  ;)

I still like the idea that if the inner row was the original concept, then an outside row was added, that  would make it the dominant (fifth) to the tonic (home key). I have absolutely no evidence for this theory, which makes me even prouder of it. I'm quite happy to be shot down in flames.

I'm quite happy to be shot down in flames.

You won't be, but you're a teacher. You have to live with the concept that you've just rewritten musical theory to accommodate an instrument that isn't recognised as an instrument, to your own criteria.
