Android app substitute for oscilloscope?
« on: July 25, 2013, 07:57:46 PM »

Am I living in a dream world if I imagined I could accurately re-tune/tune a reed in my box using my touch screen phone and an Android app substituting for an oscilloscope?
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=oscilloscope&hl=en_GB

Also with regard to touch screen phone general accuracy, anybody have any Android tuners for geetars etc that they could recommend?
*I have recently been catapulted into Androidy goodness following a recent phone upgrade.  >:E

can't help with the oscilloscope.

With tuning string instruments I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.cohortor.gstrings

It's really basic but it will put my strings in tune.

oscilloscope is of little utility, it is just a squiggly line. you need at minimum a fast Fourrier transform FFT App, ideally mapped to musical notes/cents. the later is what you'd call a tuner. my download was "n-track", an iPhone App. it also plots the frequency distributions in real time, viz the harmonics. Yes, they do change as you cut reed banks in and out.

for more accurate work I have iStrobo-soft on an iPad, together about £7. there are many others.

As i don't play strings, i confess these are in essence, toys, but very fun toys! 8)

I have the gstrings app and it works well for tuning my cello if my proper electronic tuner's batteries have gone flat.
In fact it's pretty good as electronic tuners go, but it may not be the best for tuning a melodeon.

G String eh?  >:E

Oh, it works just as well on the other three strings too  ;)

I predict that in a months time, if somebody asks you to name any smartphone app for tuning instruments, that's the one you'll remember. A crude but effective marketing ploy, especially as you never have to actually go into a shop and ask for it by name  :Ph

Found a new use. Got a fast plin earworming me, but its is in a slightly awkward C minor, with a few ectopic notes, to boot  :-\

Although I just about can get to it, not my favourite key and certainly session unfriendly back in Blighty? So I'm listening to bits off the recording and singing them back into the Tuna  ;) just write 'em down. From there, transposing into a rather more sociable Am is straightforward.

Thinking of fish … it's oyster time! :P

copied over from wrong thread :|bl

Sorry, that's «plinn». here's one at random; rapid repeat Breton with a jump step (hard work)!

also makes for some interesting oscillations (vaguely to return to topic)! This is not male fantasy stuff, comment from a French lady at a bal folk, admittedly une Bohème  ;)

Thanks for the explanation Chris  - I guessed it would be something Gallic!
