Theme of the Month for August 2013: Morris Music
« on: August 01, 2013, 01:43:55 AM »

Another return of an old favourite theme this month with many people off at many festivals, here's a theme that most people should be able to have a go at without having to practice too hard! Any tune used for, or connected with, Morris dance (or indeed the related dance traditions found in England); can be authentic to a particular tradition if you like, or simply interpreted as you like to play it and not necessarily for dance - it's down to you!

Cheers,

Clive

Clive, please could we stretch Morris tunes to include Sword tunes ?

Still squeezing after all these years.
Mostly on hohners , with a couple of Dinos and a smattering of anglos - and now a Jeffries duet

No stretch there - morris = sword (long & rapper), border, North West, molly, Cotswold, well in the world of Lester anyway  (:)

Indeed so. Any related dance tradition is fair game. :||:

Sweet Jenny Jones & Black Joker, (with a bared knee in the foreground). Just how they came out at the time.

Following on from Lester's lead, this was a dance that I learnt only a few months ago, and really like - we were taught it just as the Wheatley Stick Dance (I'm not sure if there are other Wheatley stick dances ??? - this one used shorter sticks than we normally use).

And Banks of the Dee because it is one of my absolute favourites http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2ut2gnaAxY&feature=youtu.be

And yes, I did get a Super III in the end from the Music Room  :o - thank you to everyone on Melnet who gave me advice about choosing, it was all really valuable, and thank you to Jon at the Music Room for more advice, and demonstrating its potential to sound wonderful (:)

(The thudding and jingling in the background is the dog playing with his new tennis ball - not some local uncoordinated Morris Dancers!)

The box sounds lovely, Spikey.  Good choice.  FYI the Wheatley stick dance is called 'Bobbing a Joe'.  Don't Morris tunes have strange titles?! :M

Bobbing a Joe; you kind of think might be a corruption of Bobby and Joan another morris dance tune although a quite different tune.

Here's something I recorded a couple of weeks ago....Bear Dance and Thème Vannetais - Used by border sides mainly I think..Both have been 'Tune of The Month'.
Traditionalist will hate what I have done with the tunes, but it's possibly the first step in a project I have in mind..

Thank you Steve and Lester (:).  I really like that Wheatley Jig too, Lester, but it is one of those exhausting ones to dance where everyone falls around gasping at the end :o.

Lac de St. Croix doesn't really appeal to me (mainly because it seems too difficult), but Morris tunes, that's my thing - I seem to be able to retain them in my memory. Let's be honest, most of them are not too tricky. Doesn't mean my attempts below aren't a bit rough, but it's the kind of thing I like playing...

Let's be honest, most of them are not too tricky.

Superficially anyway,  but there is a lot of rhythmic and melodic subtlety  to be discovered in many of them.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I think they are brilliant tunes because it's possible to do so much with them in terms of intepretation (if one has the ability). It's just that the basics / framework / simple melody seems to me to be relatively easy to commit to memory and then try and work with. However, I must confess this must be more than a little something to do with spending most weekends of the late 70s and 80s being taken to Morris events and so unwittingly picking stuff up...
