Nice to hear. Not a common dance.

Nice to hear. Not a common dance.

Danced by a few sides here in the East midlands. Nice tune though.

I learned it whilst spending a few weeks practising with the Foresters morris in Nottingham.

My New Year's 'boxolution' was to attempt Tune of the Month each month this year but I don't have a chance with this month's tune so I am posting here in Theme of The Month instead. The 'rules' allow for two such substitutions during the year  - my boxolution my rules, right?

I've been having far too much fun at festivals to practice  as much as I should this month and I've just realised it is August 31st so I have to post something today so here is my contribution to Theme of the Month -Black Joak/Joke from the playgroup end of melodeon playing.

Great playing, and a perfect dancing speed (IMO).  (:) As you seem to be ok with trying different chords, I'd just make one suggestion to make it even better. In the second bar of the B part, where it goes up to the 'E' (D/G speak), try playing a C bass and chord; at the moment, the E clashes with the D bass and chord that you're playing. It also breaks it up from the G and D chords all the time (apart for your little sequence at the end of each part, which is great).  (:)

That was a much busier month than I'd been expecting with the festival season in full swing; well done everyone! Time to move onto a new theme now, but as ever, late submissions are welcome - just stick them on the end here.

Cheers,

Clive

Thanks for you kind comments and encouragement Ollie. I've tried changing the basses as you suggest and it definitely sounds better and gives a little variety to the basses.

A house point to you for spotting the deliberate mistook  ;). TBH I hadn't even noticed  that :-[ I recorded it in a hurry using my laptop webcam and it looked alright to me (well, it would wouldn't it).

Another late arrival!  When the morris theme appeared, I'd just seen the Devil's Dyke Morris Men dancing to Jenny Lind at the Cambridge Folk Festival, so decided to give it a go.

Thank you, Elisteph - most kind. I'm trying to get a couple of Bob Cann tunes up to speed (literally) for my next post. After that, I'll see if I can slowly catch up with some of the tunes and themes I've missed! :|bl

Figured this is probably the best thread for this attempt at The Queen's Delight. I made fewer mistakes in the second run through, but the timing is dodgy throughout, so you have been warned :D
This is one of my favourite new tunes I've been trying to learn, and it seemed like the most efficient use of my learning time as the Cardiff Morris side's dance to this goes on for absolutely ages.

And as I managed to record it once-through without any glaring errors, here's a quick rendition of Black Joke: https://soundcloud.com/robotmay/black-joke-1

Engaging in some massive thread necromancy to post this here, as I'm fairly pleased with it.

I learned the Bampton version out of the Mally beginners' book, and then I thought that with May Day approaching it would be fun to learn the Headington parts as well. Funny thing is I find the Headington version to be much the easier of the two!

Bah, come on. It's only 4,5 years since the last post on this thread. It hasn't been dead, it was just sleeping for a prolonged period. ;)

Nicely played, very straighforward!

Best wishes,
Fred
