Poll: Tune of the Month for September 2013
« on: August 24, 2013, 11:19:54 PM »

Hi folks - time to vote again!

This month's nominees -

Jack Robinson - last month's runner up, here taken from Lester's wonderful Tune a Day blog - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10QRPjz-358

Pixie Wings - written by fine US concertina player, Jody Kruskal; there's no melodeon youtube of it yet that I'm aware of, but here's as clear a recording of the concertina original that you could hope for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMkIhDrb4-c and Jody has thoughtfully provided written music here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/a2y2iznwn1rlbqq/25%20Pixie%20Wings%20youtube%20version.pdf

Black Joak - a great morris tune, which comes in many subtlely different and some not so subtlely different forms. Here's our own Lester's version of the Adderbury Black Joke from his Tune a Day blog - http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/tune-148-black-joke-adderbury.html

Banks of the Seine - thanks Bavarian Pete - great choice - who says Tony Hall does a version on "Fieldvole Music" and there is also a simliar version by someone else on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60U9cxYSSHc.  It's tune that could be played very simply or not...therefore might suit different levels of player.  Also known as Sous Le Ciel De Paris (Under Parisian Skies), from the song.

Well, that was easy - you lot did my work of searching for tunes for me!

Cheers,

Clive

Here was the version of Sous le Ciel that inspired me:

http://accordeonaire.blogspot.com/2013/02/sous-le-ciel-de-paris.html

And here was my attempt at it:

http://accordeonaire.blogspot.com/2013/06/sous-le-ciel-de-paris-still-learning.html

I did not know that Tony Hall had done a version of it.  That was nice.

I can confirm that Tony Hall recorded this on the album Fieldvole Music, it is utterly enchanting.

Buy the album here, I can assure you it will be the best six quid you've ever spent!

The Stage voor traditionele Volksmuziek I just finished attending in Gooik, Belgium included Sous Le Ciel De Paris. I'm pulling for that choice, having gotten a bit of a head start. Plus it really is a gorgeous waltz.

We worked it up as a performance on the last day, which involved not only the trekharmonica but also singing in French. I fear that the only words I got right were Hum, Hum, Hum. Otherwise it was La, La, La for the rest of the lyrics.

Careful, Doc.

Even in France here is a bit of work to put in to get from the "hmmm" stage … to «Ô là là»  ;)

I can't wait - I learned it from Tony's record way back in 1977, and it's been my party piece ever since! Complete with gallic shrug.....

I found an accordeon tab for G/C/acc here for Sous Le Ciel de Paris
http://www.erwan-diato.fr/tab/chansons/sous%20le%20ciel%20de%20paris.pdf

Not having acc, the 3" fooled me for a bit (it means the third button on the third row that I don't have) but it gave some help to finding my way round the tune and the basses. My arms will never be long enough to keep the pull going for that long.

I suppose the task for me would be learning it on the F/Bb/Eb ... instead of my 2.5 row.  You're right, not having the "acc" row (that's Bill the Cat's row, "Ack!") makes it VERY TRICKY.

Gawd 'n' Bennett how am I supposed to choose from that lot? They're all great; particularly like to two un-Morris tunes. Much as I like Morris tunes I'll probably go for the French connection.
