Bromyard Folk Festival
« on: August 28, 2013, 03:50:37 PM »

Anyone going?

I'm going to be playing solo as well as (gulp) leading two workshops and a session. The first workshop is on picking up a D/G melodeon, which will be teaching pretty much from scratch and the second will be on right hand harmony, which I hope will be an intermediate/advanced workshop. Unfortunately I haven't yet seen a working programme, so I'm not entirely sure what I've signed up to do!

Hope to see some of you there (:)

Very tempted. I was due my second op that week, but that has just been postponed in favour of a more deserving case (how nice to be considered "routine"  :D )! Probably won't be worth season ticketing up though.

Glad to see "right hand harmony" in there.  We need more of that in UK  :|glug

I'll be there with Fool's Gambit Morris, and probably entering the open mic competition.

I will be making my first visit to Bromyard, but as I am playing for Silkstone Green's Morris I don't know how much opportunity I will have for sessions and workshops.

Are there any sessions at lunchtime, or on the Saturday evening?

Yes indeed, one of the things about Bromyard festival over the years has been the sessions. Just wander up the High Street and take your pick (making a slight diversion for the Rose and Lion).

I'll be in the King's Arms at some point if you make it that far :-)

Edited: bad memory on pub names ... Lion not Crown.

Oh, is the Hop Pole open?

Seems to be but getting extremely poor write ups on-line for the accommodation. Best quote was "Cheap and good pub down the road"  (:)

I just had a look at Bromyard High Street using instantstreetview.com  (Google street view without flash and full browser screen :-)  )  and was shocked to find the Queen's Arms boarded up and looking very sorry for itself  :-(

Apropos of nothing of course, the last time I went to Bromyard FF was about 40 years ago .
I was there with a chap called Dave Kettlewell and a lovely girl called Caro, she played a wind instrument and as the pub was so crowded she was worried about someone knocking the instrument into her teeth and ruining the reed. In those days  pub opening hours where very restricted, shutting at 14.30 and not opening again until 17.30 .
The pub gradually emptied, a fellow called Paul Havell was there and we realised that apart from us everyone had left including the staff. The pub was still open inasmuch as we hadn't been thrown out.
We played some wonderful music, Kettlewell on a Shawm and just helped ourselves to a pint when required. Religiously putting the money behind the bar.
I really don't know how that happened, but it's a memory I'll never forget.
The pubs name I can't remember, it wasn't the Hop Pole ( if that's the one at the top of the High street) it was somewhere in the middle of the town.
 Happy days. ;D

Edit, it wasn't a Shawm it was a medieval Cornet. He could play it in G (I think)

In Falcon and Mews I think. Once I know more I will spill all.

To those that don't know me and are interested in either workshop, this is what I can do right hand harmony wise - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXVKqayckH0

I'm going with Shakespeare Morris - I'd be really interested in the harmony workshop if the timings are right , very impressed with the youtube clip.

Would you be able to post the times/location please

Kind of a morris fixture, so yeah, I'll be there. (:) Good sessions on-site too... Fleece beer tent, and all manner of mad shenanigans in the football clubhouse...

...was shocked to find the Queen's Arms boarded up and looking very sorry for itself  :-(
Queen's Arms is back up and running, much classier joint now, good for sessions... used to be a bit of a dive, so needed a refit...

is Eric Geddies still making his perfect pies?
Geddes pie shop's been gone, ohh, at least 15 years now... best tip for pies and comestibles is Legges on the Tenbury Road...
