Whereabouts are you.... presuming you're in the UK?

On chinoiserie boxes I can only relate from my experiences... a D/G loose and clackety ...an A/D which is just the opposite, quite hard work but I luv the sound.  (Compared to my Erica D/G)  The D/G is long gone but the A/D won't be available until I pop me clogs :D

All answers to be prefaced with "As far as I know..."

1) in single row boxes for different keys are the push pull the same or do some reverse. I.E start with a push rather than a pull for the base note of whatever particular scale.

The tonic (base note) is always on the push.

Quote
2)In a 2 row can it be treated as two single row boxes and again do push pull reverse

Lots of people do treat them as two single-row boxes although this seems a waste of possibilities. For the push/pull bit, see 1) above.

Quote
3)I no longer feel the need to play with others or for others, needing only to amuse myself. Whilst my original box was "C", my natural voice is "D" what are the pros and cons of either, any difference in price for instance, price in my case being a prime consideration.

There are no pros and cons other than the suitability of the key for your (or anyone else's) purposes. For Irish music a D box would be much more useful than C - but only for playing with others. If you only want to play alone, either would be fine. Secondhand 1-row boxes in D might be more sought after, and possibly rarer, and hence command a higher price.

I am in Ilfracombe, Devon, thanks for your opinion, being a newbie the term loose and clacky does not mean a lot to me, I assume the keys are the clacky bit but loose? Leaking air perhaps.

Hi Wildman

I asked your whereabouts on a different post but see here you are in North Devon.  From Ilfracome you are near to Bideford which has a great club on a Thursday evening and a dance club on Wednesday.  There are some very good players there and they are very friendly.  You may enjoy an evening out, make some new friends and gain some advice and even a demo or two.  Jerry and Hillary run the club.  They will point you in the right direction.  If you telephone first they will be able to put you in touch with the right people.

As far a which box goes, I too came from a mouth organ many years ago and I feel two rows is far more rewarding.  Cheap boxes like any other cheap instrument are a pain to play.  Go for the best second hand you can get.

All the best

I have a chinese one row hohner and the quality was much better than i expected. The reeds sound great, and while not nearly as fast my "binci a mano" reeds on my PA, they are pretty descent. button travel is very deep, but can be fixed with a simple padding job if you like. workmanship could be a little better there was a couple very very minor flaws when it shipped, but everything works in good order. if its all you can spend, and do not want to wait years for a german one, go for it. mind, they are a little more expensive then the total crap chinese boxes.

good luck!

Hi, thanks for all the replies. especially the local club detail.
I did today, win a box on ebay, it is an early Hohner Club 11 in the strange keys of B/F I am able to collect as it is fairly local. I bought reasonable for a Hohner, others put off by a better looking box coming up in the next few days and the strange Keys I guess. I assume if needed in the future it would be a fairly straightforward job to change the reeds for other keys. At least this time I get a chance to make sure it is as described before parting with cash. Watch this space for an update once collected.

A straightforward job for a professional, sure, but one that would set you back considerably more than your budget for purchase, I fear.

You may well find that the seller has misread/quoted what is stamped on the keyboard.
German "B/Es" would be much more likely.

I think that translates as Bb/Eb.  Good for playing with brass instruments ;D

Well the snow has prevented me from collecting my new box, I have been looking around and it looks like a Hohner Club 11 Bflat/Eflat dating fromaround 1947, same age as me so must be knackered, hee hee but will see. In the mean time I add a photo of the Russian box. It is a Beaopych which when pronounced in Russian becomes Velorrusskie,

I hope some kind person can tell me from previous photos the chord layout, (I dont read music)
