Just watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHuD-ck425Q

The lootspill is an amazing instrument. I've been wanting to do an inside and out on it for ages, the construction and tuning are both very unusual. But I have yet to find a player willing to take one to pieces.

It would be nice to measure the tuning and temperament as well, great sound.  (:)

From Anahata, today, ''Works nicely on a 1 row...'' I think I'm roughly getting there on my new Albrecht in D, but 'nicely'? Not really. It's the triplets that are causing me pain...and just out of curiosity, what exactly does Kristjani Reilender mean ? :||: :||: :||: ???

forrest, I believe I am correct in saying that each row is tuned to just and that the voicing is different for each row.

Not sure about Kristjani, but a reilender is a type of dance.

That's not only an incredible sound, but it's also a stonking tune. I *need* to learn it.

Fantastic stuff! The second rendition just shows how it makes an awesome step-hop tune.

Well I've recorded a version which is fairly straightforwardly lifted straight from Juhan's playing. Except that all his twiddles and harmony are a little more difficult with only two rows, other than four! Recorded in one take in my lunch break.

I've looked up the liner notes and it is by one Kristjan Priks. I also typed in the description into google translate and this is what came out:

"Become surprisingly popular, and quickly spread to the author's creations, which can be regarded as ignorance can easily create a tradition. Although originally patterned guitar, accordion, or for improved fit it. The story tells of a narrow spiral stairs moving - slowly and determinedly upwards to stumble ... ludinal down again and collapsed."

So now we know.

Here is my version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZv_CpaRMzc&feature=youtube_gdata

Ukebert - at the risk of sounding like a fanboy ... that is fantastic playing!   Again.

Where the hell is the 'Like' button when you need it? Here we have a well respected and very popular pro player of great stature tipping his cap to an amateur player of extraordinary ability.

Remember you saw this first on melnet, squeezy's natural home!

Ha! You are as always, far too kind. In all honesty there wasn't much creative input into that arrangement, I just copied exactly what Juhan did!

Incidentally, I have most of his CDs, which I got from him directly. They are fantastic and well recommended.

Owen, I notice on your youtube you call it bot Reinlander and Reinlender, and on this topic it is called Reilender.   Are some of these variations between languages, or are there mistakes lurking there as well?

I think Reinlender, because I've used that more. But I don't have the liner notes in front of me ;)

Plus a blog post explaining why I am in a field ...

I thought it was obvious that you are outstanding in your field ...

Yes I did!  Hah!   8)

And fantastic playing, and if you're looking for blog topics, I'd love to hear about your progress with the descants ... I've been wrestling hard with the "double-stops" and would love to hear about your -- obviously much more fruitful -- journey with them.

This tune wasn't about descants as such - the top line is usually the melody. Basically though it's just a matter of learning right hand chords. After that everything is straightforward.

However, I recently led a workshop on right hand harmony and had so much fun that I am very keen to do it again. So I might not give away my secrets on melnet ;)

(The biggest secret is that it is nowhere near as hard as it looks)
