Theme of the Month for October 2013: Your Party Piece
« on: October 01, 2013, 12:42:06 AM »

Right folks, this month, a very general theme this month - your 'sparkly' piece that you might play when asked to play something solo. Might be simple, might be fiendishly difficult - that's down to you, and reflective of what music you particularly enjoy playing.

I suspect over the years I must have done a TOTM video for just about every sparkly tune I've got - so I'm just going to have to learn and polish another one up, aren't I? Looking forward to hearing what everyone else chooses!

Cheers,

Clive

Named after one of those big thumpers they use to tamp down tarmac. Derek said he wrote it to use the accidentals that otherwise lay idle!

Sir Sidney Smith played on a Castagnari Mignon

That's great. The box is no doubt also great for travelling, small etc..

Does that mean fettled in Somerset?

(For the petrol-heads, I did think of a Jenson Button-box....)

Playing the "one I prepared earlier" card as a stopgap, Stoney Steps was part of a set of tunes that was my standard party piece (and solo item in a performing set as a duo with Mary). But I expect most of you have seen that.
Looking at all my other YouTube uploads, there's nothing else (on melodeon, anyway) that quite fits that description.

I do have plans, though - it's time I revived Danbury Hill, for one, and... well, we'll see. It's high time I did something for ToTM again. First I have to get the November issue of Mardles magazine sewn up  :Ph

Beautifully played. Who needs more than 2R 8B, when it can be played like this?! I love how all the quavers trip along so regular and relaxed, and the bass lines that appear like magic from only 8 buttons. Looks like I might have to learn an English  :o  tune for once. Thanks

Lovely to see and hear that again Anahata!

I'll never tire of hearing it, seeing you play it many years ago really affected how I approached the left hand and was far more influential than I though at the time.  Jack's right - who needs more than 2 rows 8 basses  ;)

I like this Theme - and am going to have a go!!   But I need to decide what to play !!   I have some pieces that I find tricky that would be showing off (well, for me any way!), but actually, as I know I only get them right half the time they wouldn't honestly be a "Solo Party Piece" because I also get them wrong half the time  :|bl

So I think something that I am confident with......  I just need the neighbours to go out now so I can practice!!  :|||:

Lovely to see and hear that again Anahata!

I should say! Great to see you joining in TOTM and ThOTM too squeezy. I for one will never be put off playing because a few of the great players are around giving the amateurs like me something to aspire to. I can pretty much stagger my way through the R/H melody of Stoney Steps at a decent pace (I have a G scale Liliput!) but it lacks any signs of finesse and all of the cut note ornaments that are cheekily thrown in along the way by Anahata. Oh, but maybe one day (In a Galaxy Far, Far Away). . .

I was mightily impressed with this. I have an old Saxony piano box with four by twelve Stradella bass and having seen your excellent L/H work in this video I'll drag it back out and give it another go. Can't be doing with the R/H piano end though, that's a non-starter!

The whole of Tune of the Month and Theme of the Month is inspirational, from sitting awestruck at the feet of great players to cheering on the hard work of raw and determined beginners who so often amaze and delight with their rapid progress. This is a great resource that will figure in Google (or whoever is the next big thing) searches for decades to come.

My 'party pieces' are whatever is on the table now. These are. This is also a contribution to the debate raging quietly in FOATMAD, (Friends of American Traditional Music and Dance), whether the melodeon has a place in that musical genre. Thank you to Nick Peachey for the opportunity to workshop Waterbound  at 'Sweet Sunny South' last month. (There were six melodeons on site but only three in play).

Expecting to be bopped by a banjo anytime soon! Perhaps I should have chopped my head out of the video, (thread drift).

All the best

Hoped to take this much further but in the process I busted my growlbox, it's bad when that happens.  So that's it for now.  It's literally a piece you might play at a party.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyVJlS9FCSw
