That's not a "grey" model as far as I can tell, I think they normally have round corners on the grill. I'm sure it's a lovely box though.

You're right, it's the 1955-56 model and the first of the "reds" - though (as "next year's model") they would probably have first appeared at the end of 1954, and some of them were made in silver-grey, as were the subsequent "horse-shoe grille" model.

But they are indeed lovely boxes, in fact my 3-voice D/D# is of the same vintage, only a "full-blooded" musette-tuned 23-key Irish box  ;):

Stephen, what countries were these old Paolo boxes popular in?

Here's one that turned up in Italy (of all places! ::)) only a couple of months ago;

and I put a good friend onto it who needed and deserves such an instrument, as well as having the skills to restore and convert it.

But Paolo Soprani was always the biggest factory in Italy and they exported all over the world. Their 2-row button boxes were catalogued in various configurations, for different markets;

so one could turn up just-about anywhere.

Have many been converted and sold into the Irish market, do you know?

I only know of a few, via the Scandinavian connection...

Hi aradru,

Here's another thread where some of these stepped-board Paolos were discussed:

http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,12335.msg151735.html#msg151735

And there are links there to another thread.  A twin of the 12 bass with the sideways throw-switch was bought by an Irish member of this forum and he had planned to convert it (link in the thread I just cited).

I was interested to know where Paolo Soprani supplied boxes to back in the 1940's and 1950's,
other than the USA and Ireland of course.

You won't find too many Irish-style Paolos in the USA - they'd more usually be stepped keyboard ones for various ethnic markets there, or the 19-key D/C# Irish-American boxes, but you would find them in Scotland and England.

If I may cut to the chase; If a person were to search for vintage Paolo boxes abroad, where is a good
place to start?

If I knew the answer to that, don't you think I'd be doing it myself...  ;D

Hi,

I have been looking through several sites re Paolo Soprani Old Greys and this site might give me some idea on
what I may have.

I inherited this from my grandfather back in 1993 and have kept it in the loft since then. I believe it is a truly original
1940s Old grey in original condition. It sounds great. It was only when I was having a dinner party and looking at 'old things' on the net that an identical Soprani was listed as an Old Grey.

I will try and post some photos.

I can't seem to post photos as the file sizes are too large.

Can I send them to you directly?

Photo Razor works a treat and they come out lovely on here, it doesn't affect your originals, you just get an added but reduced copy in whichever of your picture files you've opened, titled small pictures .  http://www.stormdance.net/software/photorazor/software%20overview.htm  All the Best mory

If you can't seem to upload the picure, you can send one to me, and I'd be happy to upload it here, or just give you some information regarding the particular model.

But for goodness' sake - get it down from the loft, and into room temperature:)

Hi Russ -
Just for fun, try to post a video of this accordion - play the box slowly, one button at a time up and down the inner and outer row on the side with 23 buttons -

We will be able to tell you quickly which key the accordion is in.

I would recommend keeping this old accordion in a very safe place. It represents the Holy Grail for many accordion enthusiasts.

Do you remember your grandfather playing this instrument? Did he give you any background on the instrument?

I will try and post a video. Not sure if I can post on this site. If not I will create a youtube link.

I do remember my grandfather playing this in the 60s and 70s. He was not a professional or anything like that,
bu loved squeeze boxes. He had it from new. I am not certain where he purchased it from though.
