Poll: Tune of the Month for November 2013
« on: October 24, 2013, 12:10:15 AM »

Time to vote for next month's tune folks -this month's choice:

Jack Robinson, back again, by the skin of its teeth, last month's runner's up - taken from Lester's wonderful Tune a Day blog - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10QRPjz-358

Black Joke / Black Joak - however you spell it, a classic morris tune. Great nomination from Helena who can be seen playing it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAeayo900mg ... but I don't think that's a D/G, so here's Lester's D/G version played on his wonderful Penguin of Death pokerwork (yay!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqSL8BrNyEg

Blossom and the Rain - lots of people seem to like having a go at this tune; it's become a session classic I would suggest. A "recent" composition by Brian Peters, here's the man himself playing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLxfc7l63Pg

Halsway Schottische / Halsway Carol - a recent composition by Nigel Eaton, and the subject of a wonderful campaign to get as many different versions recorded as possible! Here's Anahata's version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEiGvUNNZhQ

There you go folks - happy voting!

Clive

I have inadvertently clicked the wrong tune. There has previously been a button to remove your vote, which I now cannot find. Has it gone, or am I just being stupid?

Sorry, I forgot to set the 'allow users to change vote' button; now done. You should be able to change your vote now.

I'm amazed. Get to quite a few sessions in the North and down as far as Severn valley and I've never heard it! Don't get to anything local to Brain though. I'd actually be cautious "sessioning" it. I see the melody in the "slow air" genre; these seem to work brilliantly solo (and it would) with "more is less" as other instruments join in and all do different twiddles? Fieldtown "signposts" another example.

[ed] ::) Thanks, Lester. seems a geographic thing, tunes often are.

Common enough around here and abouts in sessions,

That sounds familiar... (Just checking my copy of Brian's "Rattle and Roll"...)
Here you go: at the bottom of the page under The Blossom and The Rain he says:
"I tend to treat it as slow air rather than a waltz..."

You're in good company  :|glug

Have got one on loan but only just starting to work with it.  Have had a look around on t'internet at regular sources of such publications but it looks distinctively hard to get.  I suggest you contact Brian direct - contact details via his website.  http://www.brian-peters.co.uk/
He is likely to know if anyone. Otherwise you may end up having to borrow.

Somehow managed to remember my password after a long absence...

I have three or four remaining copies of 'Rattle and Roll' here if anyone's interested.  Contact me directly at brian@brian-peters.co.uk.

My website www.brian-peters.co.uk , incidentally, is new and still under construction.  For the time being the Harbourtown pages will remain live while I transfer everything across, but I'm handling any orders from the new site.

PS, regarding 'Blossom', I usually play it first as an air then inject a stronger waltz rhythm into it.  It gets played at one of the local sessions in a more strictly waltzy style, which is fine by me.

Now come on Guys - I have been waiting for two years for a tune that I actually know already to get to be tune of the Month (not a hope of being camera or microphone ready within a month - the better I get the longer it takes to be happy   :|||::-\!) - I know one of these - but can't tell you which one as that would be cheating. :|||:

Can someone point me in the direction of the sheet music for 'Blossom and the Rain'? I would like to learn it, whether it wins the poll or not, it's beautiful. Thanks.

Wow, 'Blossom and the Rain' is a gorgeous tune.  Really lovely. It'll probably be well beyond my abilities for some time but it will definitely go on my 'to learn' list.
