Theme of the Month for November 2013: Local Tunes
« on: November 01, 2013, 09:16:44 AM »

A nice simple theme this month; play us a tune from where you're from, or where you live - tell us a little bit about it too and the connection if you can!

Cheers,

Clive

Aldbury May Tune

This is the tune for the Aldbury May Song which was collected in the village of Aldbury, the base of the morris team of which I am Bagman/Foreman. I believe it is a common enough tune for May songs in Beds/Bucks/Cambs but the words are specific to Aldbury and rather more christian than most plus it also gives slimming advice on the use of skimmed milk  (:)

Aldbury May Song
I’ve been wandering half the night
And the best part of the day
And now I am returning home again
And I’ve brought you a branch of may.

A branch of may I have brought you
And at your door it stands
It is nothing but a branch but it’s well budded out
By the mighty work of our Lord’s hands

And so begins the merry month of May
The bright time of the year
When Christ our saviour died for our sins
For he loved, he loved us dear

We come this morning to your door
To taste of your new milk
And if you haven’t got any new milk
We’ll be content with skim

We come this morning to your door
To taste of your strong beer
If you haven’t got any strong beer
We’ll be content with small

Now I have a purse in my pocket
And it’s drawn with a silken string
And all I want is a little silver
To line it well within

My song is done, I must be gone
No longer may I stay
So bless you all, both great and small
And I wish you a joyful May

A couple of songs sung in Suffolk. I usually sing Flash Company without accompaniment, and Perambulator is sometimes edited on the hoof for younger listeners of sensitive disposition. Both appear in Ginette Dunne's book and I have sung them at Butley Oyster and Blaxhall Ship occasionally down the years. (Butley is no longer an active singing pub, Blaxhall has been 'saved' by Terry Davey who has long supported local traditional music).

Apologies for the camera angle but my default setting is headless!

Both slightly condensed for the benefit of those with YouTube ADD

All the best

I'd love to be able to play a few Welsh tunes but they're pretty tricky to come by. Last time I saw S&B they'd managed to get access to a folk archive somewhere over here but I don't think any of it is available online yet. I have started going along to the Cardiff Morris though, so hopefully I'll be able to pick up a number of the ones they play.

They do however play a number of tunes from Adderbury, which is where I grew up, so I've been trying to learn a number of the tunes which are played in both places. I've spent the past couple of weeks trying to get the hang of the Adderbury minor version of Princess Royal (still plenty of mistakes and dodgy timing):

Two superb resources: Blodau'r Grug and Cadw Twmpath. I use them all the time.
Both available here, plus other stuff too.

I live between Adderbury and Bampton.
Bit of a fallow patch round here then.
Not sure I'll find anything.  :o

Ooh thanks guys; I must admit that despite living here for 7 years I still know fewer than 5 Welsh words and really struggle to find many folk resources over here. Now to see if I can remember the names of some of the tunes I planned to learn  :||:

OK, quick recording session done, and here's the first of 2 recordings. A lovely slow air (or waltz, depending on who plays it!) written by the late John Close of Milton Keynes (which is where I live!). I knew John well; he was a fine singer, writer of some terrific songs, damn fine guitarist, and a pretty awful piano accordion player. And every now and then, he wrote tunes like this little gem, the Dark Hill. This still gets played quite a bit in sessions around here (in D usually), and if you start it up, you'd expect a good number of people to join in. So, ladies and gentlemen, The Dark Hill:

Played on the Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb, still the box I pick up first out of choice because it's just wonderfully emotive at this sort of stuff.

Cheers,

Clive

Just wonderful, Clive. I always think the little BbEb Preccy (with a bit of sound editing, I assume) has a distinctly "brassy" sound - like a French Horn.

I wrote this tune in memory of Winnie Wyatt. She was the maid and companion of Janet Blunt. After Janet died, her family were going to burn the boxes of collected Adderbury music and dance notes. Winnie realised how important they were and saved them from the fire.
Adderbury's 'Sharp and Blunt' side lay flowers on the graves of Janet Blunt and Winnie Wyatt each year on their May dance day.

The tune is influenced by 'Sweet Jenny Jones'

That's a lovely tune Sandy!
I danced for Adderbury when I was a teenager but unfortunately a lot of the history went over my head a bit at the time. I still make it back for the day of dance every year though!

Here is a local Molly tune, Birds a-building. It was collected in Girton , Cambridgeshire by Needham & Peck in 1933 and was being used for a very simple Molly dance of the same name. It is still used by some Molly teams today. I am playing it in C, on a one-row melodeon. It is a lumpy old tune that seems to be made up of bits from other tunes
