Naragonia - where to start?
« on: November 07, 2013, 05:19:36 PM »

Dear All,
On a previous thread our good companion Airtime posted this link of Narago1nia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnRkdpe608U

It's the first time I've really listened, and find it really quite captivating and different to things I've listened to before.
I have been aware of their name being mentioned on this forum, they popped over to Sheffield a little while back, and are well respected here.
Any recommendations as to where to start - a good cd or mp3 to give a listen to?
... and where to buy?
...and their tune book - would I cope from someone with his feet in in D/G land?

any pointers greatly recieved
cheers

Oh, how I love their music! Like you, I've only recently discovered them, via this forum.

I bought their tunebook via their website. I'm going through it s-l-o-w-l-y ... really just to savour the enjoyment of each piece.
I totally recommend it, but, as you can tell, I'm currently hardly unbiased or objective about it  ;D

Just to note though - Les Deux Frères is not a tune that's in the book (but is very learnable from the YT video you posted).

Hope that helps.
Enjoy!  :||: :|glug

Well, that's a totally positive reply!
From memory  you've got a Mory, which I think is in D/G could you cope on a 2 row D/G for some tunes or are they in more Typically European keys?

You can get the CDs from naragonia.com, and there are a fair number of youtubes of them. As for best cd , for me it's a toss up between Batiska and Carabel, but the site has a deal for a bundle of four, and if you're getting two... well, you may as well get all four and set yourself up for a Naragonia-fest.

I had the front to shout "Oi, Toon, send me the dots!" and he did!  ;D He's not too happy with the second line though . . .

Where to start? Go and see them live and get dancing. Although the tunes are great, what really makes Naragonia is the *way* they play.

Very much my experience at Sheffield (with Theo and Pam also up, dancing)  ;) but at the end I bought all the CD's on the table. Some tunes I like a lot, some less, you would choose different ones, but it is quite hard to go wrong.  Take the plunge!

@BB below: the chords on a 3 row DG are the same as on a 3 row CG, just in different places ;)

Yes. Get all four, it's magic music. Carabel and Batiska are also my favourites. And then if you like uillian pipes you can also get the two Hot Griselda albums...  It is Naragonia's tenth birthday in december!! It is quite complicated music though and definitely only for three-row boxes. It is intended for GC+ACC so I think the chords on a DG might be a bit tricky but it might work.

I will second this! And they are wonderful teachers too!

Good for you! And many, many thanks for posting the abc. It's a beautiful tune, which they play exquisitely.  8)

just to say that I personally see a melody as about a third of a good musical expression, the "playing" … about twice as important. Others might judge the ratio differently, and then medley to a different melody before anything really interesting developed :-\

Don't think I've heard Naragonia to medley tunes; happy to be corrected.

They're fantastic! The two most musical and emotive players I've heard. I bought the 4 cd deal and love every tune on all of them. Looking forward to more. See them live if you can. Bob.

The video of Naragonia's performance at Bergueda in Catalonia may be of interest - it's here:

I couldn't sleep last night - kept playing Les Deux Frères in my head. So I thought I'd record it this morning & see if that'll help me!

Played on my new box (with a proper stuffing up of the end!  ::) )

zubz: forget the endingthat was lovely playing.
Is that a new version of a Mory?
just not seen one with carving (?) on the front ) before.

Thanks Roger, the first dance looks suspiciously like Circassian Circle to me, but with utterly different music!

Yes Theo, I'd like to see them, but tis a long way from here! I missed an opportunity when they were at Sheffield but hadn't really listened to much then. I do take the point that it's how they play that's so nice.

..... and thanks for the abc Tallships. Will go explore

As to your question about where to start, put a few hours aside and watch this lot!

Thank you  :|glug
I bought it as a Mory but Clive has spotted that it's actually a Sessy.
Essentially it IS a Mory, but more ornamental. Apparently made in the 90s.
I love it!

Tallships

I am singular and low key, hence 'tallship' if it's all the same to you.  ;)   ;D   8)
