Kathryn Tickell tune ...... Grey Bull Hornpipe.
« on: December 17, 2013, 02:07:38 PM »

In the midst of converter old LPs to digital, I came across a set of tunes played and written by Kathryn Tickell.
The first tune was a lovely waltz, Brafferton Village........it's recorded on the Chieftains Christmas album, the Bells of Dublin and sounds suitably Northumbrian, if that's possible. Pdf attached
It goes into a cracker of a hornpipe called the Grey Bull Hornpipe and not a straight forward tune at all.
The  seems to be available for download in an audio format.............. I was wondering if anyone had sheet music for the hornpipe.
Thanks Robin.

Well, Brafferton's in County Durham, but it's probably close enough! I'll have a dig through my Ms Tickell dots (some of them in her own fair hand) and see if I have Grey Bull.

Both tunes are in the Northumbrian Pipers Tune Book 3. Here's a link to "Brafferton Village" on thesession.org.

Lovely tune.

Thanks..........I had checked my Piper's tune books but I had only #1 and then yellow and green ones.
If the tune by itself doesn't turn up here, I'll get a copy.

Success - I've found it among my heap file of odd sheets of music. It must be right, because it was written out by the lady herself. It's on green paper that's seen better days, but I'll try scanning it and see if I can get a readable copy. If so I'll post it later today.  If I can't get a decent copy I'll do a MuseScore version or similar.

Cheers

Here you go. Best I can do with the faint original and the size restriction on attachments. If you need a bigger copy let me know and I'll put one up on Photobucket.

Well found, Graham!

Brafferton Village and Grey Bull Hornpipe (exactly as in Ms Tickell's hand-written version) are both given in the Northumbrian Piper's Third Tunebook (p.10).  They are copyright and included in the tunebook by permission of Coquetdale Music Publishing which is why I don't scan and post them here.

Yes, I did wonder about the copyright issue; I hope she doesn't mind!

Brafferton Village played in two different keys and on various instruments on the first few minutes of this video here.

Can't find a recording/video of The Grey Bull Hornpipe on the internet yet, but both tunes are on Kathryn's recording 'Borderlands' Black Crow Records CRO 210. Worth tracking down, as it's a lovely CD.

Thanks to all who were interested............
I've Noteworthy-ied Graham's attachment into a .pdf ( :|glug) and will post it if the copyright issue is sorted.
I also recorded it here.....................  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGM7i0bXPKQ
Slowly sight read ( mistakes and all) on an English concertina.
I think it would be quite an advanced melodeon tune; I'd be pleased to hear what anyone can do with it.

Yep but in fact no repeat  is indicated either in her playing or her notation..........A part is 4 bars repeated and B part is 8 bars. So it was deliberate.
Thanks for proofing it though. ( and the kind words about my playing...............I think it does take some confidence to post to a forum where there are so many excellent players)
