One row with bells!
« on: December 21, 2013, 03:14:11 PM »

Here's an interesting melodeon accessory.

Melodeon with bells by hankins.greg, on Flickr

Note that there's a bell on either end of the bass handle.

Just showed up on ebay:

That's almost definitely a Russian garmon/gamoshka: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garmon

The little hammered bells are a common feature of a subset of those. If you search ebay under "garmon" you'll likely run across more of those amongst the larger non-belled ones.

Iirc, the term "garmon" is because there's no clear "h" sound in Russian so a lot of foreign terms starting with "h" go to "g". Thus the odd mentions in Russian WWII histories of "Adolf Gitler ". Seriously .

Don't get too excited now, folks: this is a very ordinary 19th century German one row box.

I've fitted bells to several one-rows in my time.

it is a saratovskaya garmon

It's true that a Saratovskaya garmoshka has bells, but it doesn't look like that (I have one) and I've seen ordinary melodeons with bells like that. So...

This is not a saratovskaya garmon/gamoshka.

Here is the old Saratov accordion:

How do you actually play the bells? They don't appear to be button controlled, do you just flick em when you fancy?  ???

There's usually a spring loaded lever by the air button.

On mine they are rung by levers attached to the bass and chord button action.

Saratovskaya garmon/garmoshka:

Buttons 1+3

press sharply and deeply -  bell on

press the shallow and easily – bell off

You should be able to replace a reed with a whistle.
...but percussion is a much more appropriate thing to add to the bass buttons.
