Poll: Tune of the Month for January 2014
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:49:44 PM »

It's that time again - 4 more tunes to choose from!

Foul Weather Call - Last month's runner up, and still very relevant at this time of year (in the UK, not necessarily in Australia): There's now a couple of great recordings of this on youtube for us to listen to: Ed Rennie's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1FulrcFrns and Anahata's (first tune): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU8nuTsKDOQ

Mudgee Waltz - time to plunder Lester's wonderful collection of videos again! Here he plays this lovely waltz from Australia: http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/tune-34-mudgee-waltz-beautiful-waltz.html

... and filling things up from Lester's tour-de-force:

Monks' March - a morris dance tune from Sherborne; did you think we'd done them all? Nope, there's this fine tune which hasn't been in the poll before:  http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/tune-115-monks-march.html

Schottische a Virmoux - blimey, this takes me back. A traditional (or probably La Chavanee?) schottische from the central france traditions: http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/tune-191-schottische-virmoux.html

Thanks for your videos Lester - you're a star! Happy voting folks; remember that tune of the month is only as strong as the number of people making sound or video recordings, so perhaps now's the time to make good on a melodeon new year's resolution to have a go? Pick one you think you'd like to have a go at! And without being too dramatic, use it or lose it!

Cheers,

Clive

Virmoux was found in the manuscript book of of dance tunes left by Louis Virmoux, musician from the Auvergne. But it was arranged by Frederic Paris and popularised by Chavannee.

Not being one to argue but Monk's March is in 2/4 and the Belle Isles March is in 4/4

Belle Isles March
Monk's March

Well, yes, but only if you confine the comparison to the the two Morris traditions that you cite (though I'd argue that the Sherborne version is in 2/2 rather than 2/4). But Belle Isle's does turn up in 2/2 in non-Morris sources, eg the Gibbons ms (published as 'Lincolnshire Collections' vol 1). More generally, and at risk of thread drift, I suppose it's a matter of judgement as to how far different the rhythmic treatment of a melody line has to be before (irrespective of title) you call it a different tune. I would tend to say that Proudlock's Hornpipe is another variant of Monk's and that Jamaica and the Rogue's March are essentially the same tune, as are Bielbie's/ Curlew Hornpipe and A Little Drop of Coffee. But of course you can defend a different view.

Cheers and all the best for 2014,
Steve
