Have Castagnari been contacted about this yet?

Castagnari says they do not ask for that type of info from their valued customers.
Since they are essentially no different from any other business, if they did it would be as surprising as if you bought a pair of pants in M&S and the lady at the checkout asked for your date and place of birth.

Here is another angle on this.

I am a regular customer of Carini in Italy.  I've recently ordered things from them and they have asked me for similar personal data with this explanation:

Quote
Hello,
thank you very much for the new order. Because of a new Italian law in force since 01/10/2013, we are forced to ask you to fill in the questionnaire in the Annex,
a copy of a valid identity document. All data will be treated with the strictest confidence and for the sole purpose of fulfilling our legal obligations. We apologize again for the inconvenience, but not absolutely dependent on us.
Sincerely

So the OP's email may have been a phishing attempt, but based on this new law.

I have just been requested to supply date and place of birth by Nicolò aAlessi from whom I bought some mandolin tuners earlier this year. It must be as Theo says, be a requirement in Italy.

Tuner/repairer, now retired, but still playing! Happy to offer advice on repairs etc., and might be persuaded to undertake the odd emergency job for local and longtime  customers. Selling a few melodeons from my collection currently....

I too am one of Carini's regular customers. When I went there just before Christmas they told me about this new law, which inserts itself very well into the long list of idiotic hassles Italian bureaucracy has come up with during the last couple of years. Alessandro's embarrassment and anger over this was very obvious!

Yes, mine came by email with an explanation in several languages, and their annoyance with the whole thing came through very clearly.

Having spent much of 2013 at home I am astonished how often the hone rings.

I've always wanted to hear a hone ring......

I'm somehow reminded of the time (maybe 20 years ago?) when I received a delivery of 3-stopper accordions (with two-voice tremolo and one bassoon) from Italy and found that several of them had no stoppers and were in (three-voice tremolo) musette tuning.

When I protested about this, I was informed that it would be "against Italian law" for me to return them, though it was (to me) clearly "against EU law" for them to have sent me goods that were not "as described"...  ::)

just perhaps....you're the kind of collector...that needs yet another implement....the box of your dreams?... this would be a calvi parma 4v ... (rear coupler) in b/c?.... to dream for....preceded paolo by an Italian kilometre (three/four French,), reverse inner-row parallel pallet lift.... alu soundboard... screaming sound....or maybe  a hohner two voice?.... nice,... tame,..inoffensive to all bar  the fiddlers?  I need money , for the juice.

Sorry, but I've already got "the box of my dreams" - a 1950s 3-voice Paolo Soprani in D/D#, and in thoroughly "unmolested" condition.

Wouldn't give you tuppence for your old B/C...  :P (Old iron, old iron!)

we all know by now, that it is the colour that really matters.

Couldn't give a feck about the colour - does it sound like Joe Cooley's box? (Like mine does, in spades!)  ;)
