Theme of the Month for January 2014: One Row Melodeon Music
« on: January 01, 2014, 12:37:29 AM »

So simple a theme, I can't imagine why I didn't think of it before! Any melodeon music played on one row - either on a real one row melodeon, on a 2 or more row instrument ( but limiting yourself to one row - no row crossing allowed!), or of course a Chanson if you have one or two lying about.

You might want to try some dedicated one-row music; e.g. Cajun, Quebecois or East Anglian music - but there's plenty of other stuff will fit. In fact the vast majority of stuff fits on a one-row with a little ingenuity; it just sounds a little different, which is not always a bad thing.

PS: Anyone who's built a one-row on Emmanuel's course, here's your chance to show it off!

Good luck!

Clive

And just in case you thought you can't play tunes with accidentals on a one row:

Like Lester, I love one-row instruments too.  (:)
Here's my recording of two Québecois reels:
'Reel Eugène' composed by Arthur Pigeon and 'Hommage à Gilles Laprise' composed by Philippe Bruneau.
The tunes are played on my 1-row 4-stop melodeon in D ('The Golden Box') made in Stowmarket, Suffolk, in October 2008, under the tutelage of  Emmanuel Pariselle.

I was inspired to learn these tunes after watching the lovely 'Commando Trad' Mission 5 Montreal flash-mob performance on Youtube. I still think this is one of the very best flash-mobs out there. It's just so full of joy!  (:)

Another Blue Peter tune I'm afraid, but my one-row is up north, and I'm not.

What is it about the one row? If I was forced to get rid of all my boxes and keep only one, it would be the one row. Maybe it's the sound..

Anyway:

With thanks to John Kirkpatrick for a great tune.

Here's a video I did playing The Nutting Girl, remarkable because it doesn't have all the clunking and clanking of bellows and spoons prevalent in my one row videos.

Here's another take on the Wells Waltz, an East Anglian tune originally sourced from the dulcimer playing of Mollie Whittaker of Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk. Apparently Mollie learned the tune from her father.

Like Lester, I first learned this tune from the one-row playing of Katie Howson at Melodeons at Witney in 2002.  A couple of years later, when preparing all the transcriptions for the EATMT tunebook 'Before the Night Was Out', I was able to listen to a recording of Mollie's original dulcimer playing. To be brutally honest, it wasn't that inspiring, but in mitigation, Mollie was very old by the time the recording was made and apparently hadn't played her dulcimer for some time previously. But it's Mollie's version which appears in the tunebook.

Personally, I much prefer the version which I learned from Katie, which is how I've developed it for myself. It has become one of my most favourite of waltzes. In the concurrent  'Advanced Tutor?' thread on this forum, there has been some discussion about developing chords, harmonies and counter-melodies on the right-hand side of the instrument. The one-row melodeon particularly lends itself to doing this and hopefully I've filled out the tune in this way - especially on the second time through.

On this recording I'm playing on a Marc Savoy 1-row 4-stop melodeon in G, shortly before I sold it on to another melnet member.  ;)

Enough nattering. Click here for the Wells Waltz!

OK. I am not at a high standard of play, but I like these two little Hohners and they may be of interest to others.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo9mnDj8Khs  Lady Alexander's Hornpipe -  My main squeeze, a rebuilt HA-113 in D, thanks to Michael Usui of Irish Dancemaster Accordions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMRrlQlFulY  Snowy Path (by Mark Kelly) on a pressed wood Hohner in G. I think it is a pretty box.

Happy 2014 to all squeezers!

I once borrowed an old Hohner 4-stopper in C and recorded an Australian bush dance tune called the Galopede. One day I'll get around to buying myself a one-row in D ...

Nice playing and nice tune! It's not the usual version of Galopede which we know here in the UK.

Nice playing and nice tune! It's not the  usual version of Galopede  which we know here in the UK.

perhaps there were two incontinent Greeks with tunes named after them!

My stock of one-rows has left me with a Hohner 1040 and a Hero in playable shape. Since winter always brings tropical thoughts to mind, I have learned this on the 7 note scale of the Hero, with a bit of uke and some digi-rhythm on the side:

I enjoyed Lester's latest offering, Iron Legs and decided to give it a go for this thread.
