This, I thought when I saw it, struck me as unusual

Has no one told him that the Melodeon Police will take his instrument off him if he uses his thumb to play notes!   :)

Nice clip,I doubt that I'd have seen it otherwise.

I can hardly play without using my thumb anymore. It's a good thing the Melodeon Police only have jurisdiction in England. My three-rows don't count as melodeon anyways.

I use my thumb occasionally for stretching tunes. When I do get the chance to go to a session I find myself apologising for this because I don't want to shock the folk fundamentalists.  Had no idea it wasn't the 'norm' til it was too late. Infact, I think it might have been  Lester that first pointed it out to me.

Always learning,

Sandy

I was most impressed by the warm up of the hand at the beginning.  That's obviously what I need to do if I'm going to play like that :)

He appears to be getting a vibrato effect by waggling his finger on a button.  How is this possible?

I think his vibrato effect just shaking the accordion thus affecting the air pressure coming through the bellows. I do this sometimes by shaking the box upon my knee.

I use my thumb.  The accidentals at the very top of the keyboard are, to me, put there specifically to be played by the thumb, otherwise they would be placed in the middle of the keyboard similar to a club accordion. Am I way off here? Perhaps this is what happens when you try to Learn without the aid of being able to watch dvds or youtube clips, you just start out doing what feels right to you and are not yet corrupted by another's technique.

Saw this one a while back, I thought it was a nice tune.  Wasn't there a new member here some time back, asking about klezmer on the box?

Playing notes with the thumb is common in conjunto/tex-mex styles, also playing the steyrische box seems to require this.  It would seem logical to do whatever is required in some circumstances...  I think hard and fast rules about fingering are a little silly unless they're used as a beginner's guidance tool; when an advanced student or player has learned when it's okay to break them, such rules have served their purpose and cease to be 'rules.'

I hear they are thinking of expanding the melodeon police as part of the new economic stimulus plan.

Nice pic Lester.
