Spot of bother with ABC Explorer 1.6.1
« on: January 07, 2014, 09:28:03 PM »

Hello my technically minded peers,

I have just updated my ABC Explorer software to the current 1.6.1 to try and avoid this error message whenever I try and play a track:

***File Timeout***
Incorrect ABC code: Impossible to play

But I am still getting the code, as I was on 1.5.1.

Any ideas? Help welcome!

Thanks,
Mel

Thanks! I tried uninstalling and reinstalling - still the same problem though. Had the same problem with 1.5.2 version, hence the update on software version. 1.5.2 used to play all my files - including the one posted above - but not now...

I had a similar problem some time ago and ended up installing Easy ABC then I went into the settings in ABC Explorer where you can choose the default tools and pointed to abc2midi in the Easy ABC folder, it's worked ever since!

Easy ABC is worth installing anyway as it has some useful features.

It works fine on my machine, it must be some corruption in your abc2midi. Try deleting that and just re-installing a different fresh version off the net.

Had the same problem Saturday. Reinstalled it a couple of times before I managed to find out how to get it operating in English rather than Italian (really not sure how that happened). Gave up and tried Easyabc in the end.

Quick search for possible issues suggests that I might not have had it tweaked for Vista use.

That's a new front page on his site, which I haven't seen before.

Thanks Peter! This is now working, and as I can export to PDF with Easy ABC I can get on with compiling volume II of the tunebook for my Steady Speed Session!

I'm pleased it worked although I have to say I use Explorer for creating PDF tune books myself. Easy ABC is superb for reorganizing and renumbering ABC files, creating crib sheets and accurately transposing tunes to another key. ABC Editor is supreme at creating an index of the contents of an ABC file but utterly baffling otherwise! Navigator is a bit of everything. Install them all, they take up very little space and all have at least one thing they do better than the rest!

Scary isn't it? Particularly as this is our weapon of choice!  :o

There appears to be an unmatched closing bracket at the end. ABC Explorer 1.6.1 was a bit unhappy with the file until I deleted the bracket, it now seems happy.

Hi Malcolm,

Apologies for being pedantic but you need to quote the post you are commenting on for your statement to make sense! Were you talking about this tune?

If so the square bracket at the end ( ] ) isn't needed and is bad abc syntax, Explorer will highlight it as nonsense but it ignores it and prints/plays correctly. Or at leasy my version does.  ???
