Anyway, anyone fancy getting involved. I might stick a song or two on there. Looks like fun.

As LDT put this thread on Recordings and Videos I'd naively assumed that it would be of interest to the many of us on here who play and/or sing and might want to get involved.

We're planning to put a song on YT soon in response to this. There won't be any melodeons involved, but I'll post a link here anyway when it happens.

Was darkly wondering about making it Theme of the Month, though I think I'd open it up to anything with a link to Cecil Sharp rather than the 6 things the BBC seem to have limited it to.

The BBC have listed 6 items for which music and (where appropriate) lyrics can be downloaded from their site, but my understanding is that any song or tune collected by Sharp should be eligible, though obviously you'd have to do your own research to find the music and words for something not listed there. The Full English web site looks like a good place to start, for those sufficiently adventurous to go down that route.

I don't think I'm a good enough player to even attempt it. Especially lately I feel like my playing is going backwards downhill. But I'll enjoy hearing others attempts.

I'll probably put up a tune or two, and am hoping to work with my housemate on something a little more... experimental for one of the songs.

Right then! I've recorded two of the tunes suggested on the R2 Folk Show Cecil Sharp Project page. I put slightly more effort in than a TOTM in that I played and mixed in acoustic guitar via Audacity.

I've not put any links up to the BBC yet but probably will soon. I'm looking forward to hearing others' contributions.

Edited 17th February 2014 to remove references to Soundcloud (I'm deleting my account there and intend to stick to YT for the mo).

Lady De..... Don't think that way. It's a bit like learning Morse code  you reach a plateau  and nothing seems to happen , then suddenly you seem to grow wings and take off. Believe me, I've been there. :||:   :|||:

Not sure yet which gives the best sound - I'm assuming Soundcloud should.

Good question.
As far as I can determine, Soundcloud streams everything at 128kbps.
YouTube will do stereo audio sound at 384kbps IF your video resolution is 720p or better (what they call 'HD')
For lower resolutions (e.g. 640x480) it drops to 128k for stereo.

YouTube used to distort sound horribly in processing, but it seems a lot better now.

Also I read somewhere that if you upload stuff to Soundcloud and allow download (as opposed to streaming) Soundcloud will let downloaders have the exact file data you uploaded, but I don't think that's relevant here as most people are going to stream it (i.e. just play it off the web site).

Not YT, but Soundcloud as it's turned out (the camera went to sleep on the good take)

Nah, but I hadn't realised the magnitude of his skills as a cellist nor appreciated until now Mary's great skills as a teller of tales. A superb performance by any standard.

Thank you - it was actually a quick Sunday afternoon 2nd-take throw-together that turned out better than I expected. Also it was meant to be a video with mics out of the frame, so the sound was a bit compromised, but rescued by extremely good and very directional mics. No video: I thought the camera was running but it wasn't, and Mary didn't want to sing it again.

We have, of course, performed that arrangement many times and already recorded it twice, but we haven't done it at all recently (not for at least a year) and I've been a bit out of practice on the cello, as usual.
