My quick and dirty set of arbitrary but easy rules for your "first box", Hohner or similar, used, from reputable owner or dealer, get it tuned:

If you live in UK, buy a DG
On the Continent, GC, except in Germany, a CF
Ire, or wanting to play Irish, BC
US, nothing native in two row, so see above.  In one row, Cajun or French-Canadian C or D
Tex-Mex: GCF

If you like free reeds, it won't be your last box, you won't be out a packet for it, easy to learn a ton of tunes on, etc…..

UK != England.

Also, there are a lot of B/C players in Ireland but they are not the only option by a long way  (:)
