Tune of the Month for February 2014: The Abbess
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:29:26 AM »

Well, that was as clear a victory as I can remember - this month, The Abbess, a fine recent composition by Andy Cutting on his solo CD (hint Andy - get some more printed!)

Lots and lots of videos on this on youtube, which I think bodes well for it joining Flatworld as a modern classic which will probably be still around in 100 years time. Step forward Sandy : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1ytDwuTkeI , Roland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RhDelNyUUM , Chris: http://youtu.be/p0fjwEfs2tc?t=3m24s , Peter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU7dlLY04cU and many, many more. Oh, and Andy himself: http://youtu.be/k3XMGlbUYpI?t=2m38s

and thanks to Bill, here's the dots, together with some fairly ambitious chords (didn't realise there were so many ... . eeeep!)

Of course, you don't have to use all those chords, or even any of those chords. Play it as you like, and play it as you can, but at least give it a shot - especially if you voted for it (I know who you are!); we're all going to be learning with this one.

Initial thoughts; it plays on a one row (in the upper octave), but sits best on a two row D/G or similar for the full chordy goodness. Expect to do a good deal of cross rowing if you want to get all the chords! I'll try and get a demo video up in a few days (no promises - got to learn it first) but in the meantime there's *lots* of versions on youtube to get on with.

Thanks to Andy for letting us use his wonderful tune - good luck!

Taking my usual lazy route  . . .

Here's a version I recorded the night I learnt Andy's beautiful tune. It's probably evolved a bit since then. Played on my Hohner CF Pokerwork.

There are many great players on this forum Martin and it's impossible to say which of the all of the great performances is best but I think it fair to say that yours is amongst them!

I am truly impressed!

Beautifully done - demonstrates the versatility of the Pokerwork, as well as the talents of the player.

Thanks folks. It's a beautiful tune played on a lovely box.

Strange about the Soundcloud link - even stranger is that I can't play my own uploads and I have no idea why.

Almost every time I visit soundcloud I have to reboot my broadband router. It gets like that anyway from time to time on some sites, but it seems to do it most often on Soundcloud.

Anyway, a lovely performance, and proof if it were needed that there's really not much that can't be done absolutely perfectly on a Pokerwork. I've been trying it this morning on my C/F club (a box I love to bits) and that's sounding very promising too, though I started work on the tune with the Dino. Not, it's not ready quite yet...

Here's mine - probably about my 20th attempt and I still hit a chord I didn't want but wasn't entirely *wrong* and I don't think if I played it another 20 it would necessarily get any better! Played on my D/G Hohner Pressed Wood which has 'neutral' chords.

Many thanks McGrooger - that is going to help me crack this tune - which, to be honest, at the moment I am struggling with. Thanks again. (BTW I've watched it twice now - and it still says "No Views")

....and here is my final attempt, this time on  a G/ C. Did this out of curiosity to hear the difference between the boxes, they do have a definite similarity in the fact they could both do with a tune-up. :o

I banked on this winning, it took a couple of weeks to learn and some finger stretching but now it's there or thereabouts its so much fun to play

My attempt.

Very glad you didn't carry out your threat to stop recording, these are great and they helped me to understand what the tune might be doing (as in a lightbulb coming on).  Especially liked the Busillachio version for the warm sound and gentle feel if that's the right word.

Many thanks Matt you are too kind. I still find recording myself a painful experience but I think it is important to my playing to hear myself as others hear me, a pretty sharp learning experience but one I would recommend. Still not ready to reveal my melodeon face though :o !

Oof, this tune is probably teaching me more about how the bass/chords/treble go together than anything I've tried before. I couldn't get it sounding even vaguely like the tune until I took a look at those chords from Bill, as a lot of the tone really seems to come through when you get some of those right.

Very good stuff so far folks - keep it up! Here's a quick go from me on the Castagnari Lilly in A/D (so I'm playing in D) - I was going to do it in D/G, but McGrooger's D/G version is as clear a video to learn from as you could hope for... so I've gone for the Lilly whose tone suits the tune wonderfully I think (D/G tutorial video still to come though at some point hopefully, now I've learned it!)

http://youtu.be/qkXy2r0u1Ws

Some thoughts on the tune - it fits wonderfully, and like lots of Andy's stuff, very logically on a 2 row melodeon - in this case in the lower octave. I can't get the chords to match those on Bill's PDF though - not for the first few bars anyway. I make the opening bars

G-Am|Bm-G|C-C|Am-D

for example (in D/G speak) - the Am in bar 1 and Bm in bar 2 are different... and bars 6 and 7 look fairly different too. So headline is... feel free to run away from the printed chords; I'm pretty sure they're different to what appears on the CD for example.

Anyway, that's all for now - good luck folks and keep posting!

This one's been hard work for me. Several takes abandoned when they went wrong, then one I thought I'd use but after I'd finished editing the audio and video together and checking before uploading I decided there were too many cock-ups and speed variations. So I practised some more and did another one that's much better. Still some mistakes, but it will take me a long time to get it much better than this...
