Our friends at the BBC have a project this month to get people playing music collected by Cecil Sharp here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03ldc63/profiles/cecil-sharp

... so why not join in? The BBC site lists 6 different tunes, but there's lots, lots, more, including a huge part of the traditional morris repertoire. Here's some useful places to find lists of tunes

http://www.vwml.org/browse/browse-collections-full-english/browse-cjs2# (the Full English archive - you can also browse Cecil Sharp's diaries online here too)

... and this very exhaustive list

http://www.tradcap.com/folkdancetunes.html (most tunes have ABC if you look about carefully).

There's got to be something you like amongst that lot!

If you want to send your recordings to the BBC too (let's flood them), the BBC site has these words of advice:

Quote
We'd like to hear recordings of your own performances of the music that Cecil Sharp collected. You can publish your recordings to YouTube, Soundcloud or Audioboo. Each of these services will allow you to sign up for a free account and publish your own recordings. We'll be embedding a selection of the submissions onto the Radio 2 website so please make sure that your submissions are suitable for a family audience.

Once you have published your audio you can share it in one of the following ways:

:: Email folkshow@bbc.co.uk with a link to your recording

:: Tweet a link to your recording using the hashtag #R2CecilSharp

We will be sharing some of our favourite recordings in Radio 2's Cecil Sharp Collection. Please note: We are unable to accept or share recordings sent directly to Radio 2. All recordings should be published to Youtube, Soundcloud or Audioboo.

So there you go folks - good luck and happy recording!

Cheers,

Clive

Here's one I prepared earlier as discussed on the 'Recordings and Videos' thread. I put it on a newly opened Soundcloud account too but after some wise words from Anahata about sound quality I'll just show the link to YouTube below. Being an old (fashioned) chap I emailed the Folk Show address (no Facebook/Twitter thingies for me!) and have now indeed got a link on the BBC Cecil Sharp Project page, so it didn't take long.

Lovely playing, lovely tune Pikey.
It's on the learn list and I really must try and get a new tune under my belt, if other old buggers can do it, I'm semi-sure I can.
By the way, good to hear it on the Lilliput   :||:

Ta. I think it's in the mixingmytoasties mode, played on a quaint box whilst crossing and uncrossing rows with the reed interval set to 3 dollars 5 cents with Virgin buffalo armpit leather on the valves with the tune originally being played by a grey haired bloke called Fred who had kippers for his tea which explains the repeats in the tune.........

Here you go - a couple of well known Cecil Sharp ditties (ahem), Black Nag and Nonesuch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s2oXReMcdI

Wait I hear you cry! Aren't they Playford? Well yes they are, but Cecil collected them, came up with piano arrangements of them (which I ignore) and stuck them in a series of volumes called 'English Country Dance Tunes' - which you can find scans of here:

http://www.larkcamp.com/cecilsharp.html

These 2 are from section 4. As you'll see looking through the titles, he's pretty much covered off the entire Playford's Dancing Master, as well as a goodly number of standard session and morris tunes.

These 2 are played on the Bb/Eb preciosa of course.

Enjoy,

Clive

The Shepton Mallet Hornpipe and the Radstock Tune (sometimes called the Radstock Jig but not so in Sharp's own notes) were collected by Cecil Sharp, along with a number of other tunes, from James Higgins, a fiddle player at the Shepton Mallet workhouse.

http://youtu.be/6DwxLwZNPLo

I found some less well known tunes from Higgins on the Full English web site and I want to learn some of them. They include yet another version of The Triumph and several more hornpipes.

Here's my contribution....this tune has many names and versions, I'll Go and List for a Sailor, The Unfortunate Tailor, etc. The version that I liked the most was the one from the Askew Sisters. Of course they play it much more brightly and precisely than myself, but here 'tis anyway:
                          http://youtu.be/DIxd7cgByj8

and as an added experiment, here's the audio only on Soundcloud:
 https://soundcloud.com/for-rest-1/list-for-a-sailor-unfortunate

Not sure, but I think the audio quality is declining on Soundcloud and improving on Youtube  ???

That sounds great, Forrest and builds really nicely.  (:)
Like you, I tried Soundcloud but I always much prefer to see someone playing, what their box looks like etc. even if the sound wasn't quite as clear. I'd still go to YT even if there was just a photo to accompany the tune.  But by all accounts the sound on YouTube is probably at least as good as SC anyway. Also I got a dodgy email just after opening my Soundcloud account which makes me wonder how confidential personal details are there.

Recorded a little while ago but I believe all these tunes were collected by Mr Sharp at one time or another.

Played on the trusty CF Pokerwork.
