A touch of glamour!
« on: February 23, 2009, 05:36:33 PM »

Here is a YouTube video of Maria Kalaniemi and friends playing Castagnari melodeons and singing a traditional Finnish song.

Maria is the blonde lady in the red dress in the front row. She is better known for her exquisite CBA playing, of which she is one of the world's finest today. But it's nice to see her here playing what looks like bog standard Castagnari Studio.

More CBA glamour here and a great tune....

Lovely!  Now I know why I love Finnish music.

Maria Kalaniemi is one hell of a CBA player.

Seriously though, with my wife being a founder member of Britain's only a capella vocal group specialising in Finnish and northern european music, I've really got into the Finnish sound.  From great composers like Sebelius and Rautavarra, to exuberant and at times spine chillingly beautiful folk tunes, to tango... I sometimes think that the Finns are the most musical race on earth.  When Enkelit, my wife's group, was performing in Tampere, it seemed like everyone sings, everyone dances.  Its wonderful too, to experience a country where traditional music is not marginalised.

Markku Lepisto is another fantastic Finnish player who doubles on the CBA and the diatonic box.  His CD "Silta" which you can download off Itunes, is some of the most skillful diatonic accordion playing I've ever heard.
