Hohner Student 1 Conversions
« on: February 16, 2014, 04:11:25 PM »

Thought you might be interested in a couple of Hohner Student 1 Piano Accordions I have recently converted to melodeons. They are both D/G, 4th button start, G Scale boxes.

Click on the image for a bigger version.

This one is covered in ivory celluloid and has art-deco style decorations.

This one is painted with what I guess is transfer printed decoration.

Suprised that Hohner did not produce melodeons with these rather prettier decorations.

More probably screen printed I think.

Very nice indeed, I've played the painted one and it is a lovely piece of kit. Sounds and feels great to play.   Had to fight down an attack of M.A.D. to be honest  :||: ::)

It's probably obvious to everyone else, but what is 'G scale' box ?  :-[
Lovely job, Lester, wouldn't mind having a go on them myself.

I have a vague memory of a TOTM video with someone playing a Hohner with that very finish. I can't remember what or who now; I do remember I sent a message asking whether it was a conversion or an original, but I never got a reply.  I have a Student PA in that finish which I bought with the intention to convert the treble end to melodeon but retaining the Stradella LH.  I was looking at it only the other day and thinking "I must get round to that ......"

Also Simon Ritchie made a box like the second of the two photos. I don't know what tuning he did for his.

Ah - that may be the one in the video I'm thinking of.

Thanks for the link Anahata and Lester, but I still don't see the relevence of the term 'G scale' ? Maybe I'm just trying to read too much into it. Why not 'D scale' or 'DG' scale? Both the D and the G rows have the Do Re Mi bit in the middle of the row with missing accs and the ends.

It's the reference to the modification of both rows at the chin end to give you a full lower octave scale of G major. Sometimes known on this forum as the 'Anahata' layout.

I devised the system for my Oakwood when it was made.
I'm very flattered to have something named after me, but it seems quite certain that others have independently thought up the same layout if they were trying to get the most useful notes and fewest duplications in a low-note layout, so I make no claim for uniqueness nor to have got there first.
I can put my hand on my heart and say I invented the "G-Scale" name, in a fit of modesty...

Trouble is that "Anahata layout" is an equally convenient epithet, and quite established. There are several similar examples in "le Tron" "Heim" "Pignol/Milleret" and makers/tunersaccept these as a useful shorthand. eg Theo was OK with "Anahata" for the Dolly's box retune a year back.

So you could think of it as an affront to your modesty, or expropriation of your name into the public domains. Either way, nothing to be ashamed of.  :|glug

Hohner Student I has 22 notes. Any reason why you didn't make use of the extra note ?
