Hohner Corona models
« on: February 28, 2014, 12:50:05 AM »

The differences between Corso and Corona were being discussed in this thread, so I thought I'd open a new topic to demystify the wide world of the Hohner Corona.

Corona II
31/12 MM
China
Note vertical name and gold letters.

Corona II Classic
31/12 MM
Germany
Note horizontal name and painted letters.

Corona II Supreme
31/12 MM
Germany, 150th Anniversary Special Edition, out of production

Corona III
31/12 MMM
China
Note vertical name and gold letters.

Corona III R
31/12 LMM
5 couplers
Germany, out of production

Corona III RS
31/12 LMM
5 couplers
Germany, out of production

Corona II Xtreme
34/12 MM
Germany
Note: the 2008 Corona Ii Xtreme seems to have had 3 register switches, which is now Corona II T.

Corona II T Xtreme
34/12 MM
3 register switches
Germany

Corona III N Xtreme
34/12 LMM
5 register switches
Germany

Corona III V Xtreme
34/12 MMM
5 register switches
Germany, 2008, seems to be currently out of production

A few notes. All today's Chinese Coronas have the Hohner name stacked vertically when the box is in playing position. All of today's German Coronas have the Hohner name spelled horizontally when the box is standing on the bass cabinet's feet. Some built in Germany before the Taiwan buyout will show the letters of the Hohner name stacked vertically, but most pre-buyout German examples have it painted horizontally. Older German examples may be distinguished from more recent ones in the same way as Erica, Corso, and Double Ray: grille flush with cabinet, letters filled in by paint, wooden keyboard. Signature models currently offered by Hohner for Los Tigres Del Norte, Flaco Jimenez, and Steve Jordan are made in Germany and have custom tweaks, but photos are not included here. Also omitted, but related, are the 3-row models that preceded the Corona proper, and BCC# Hohner Trichord. The Corona III R and III RS are essentially the same, although the body style is different and the couplers are a different shape. Someone once told me that the Corona III RS was built in Switzerland, and if anyone can verify this, I'd appreciate it. All Coronas in the the Xtreme line, as well as all Corona Classics and the special edition Corona II Supreme, have been fine tuned post production in Trossingen. Xtreme has a fluid and quiet action, but the sound is 100% Hohner.

When was the buyout?

In February 1998 Hohner issued the following press release :

The Matth. Hohner AG has started to reduce their production as planned. As already disclosed at the general meeting by the management board on November 26th 1997, plans for re-organization and to relocate parts of the production line to the new partners of China have begun.

Hohner production islands have been installed in the production plants of partners in China and Taiwan. In these units the production of assembly groups for mouth organs, accordions and wooden recorders is carried out by Hohner machines.

In December woodworking machines as well as machines for the production of spare parts and accessories and pre production materials were shipped to China. A group of Hohner employees left for China at the beginning of February to supervise the installation of the production plant and to implement the respective production process. After component production begins in China, the quality and Hohner standards of the assembly groups will be monitored and guaranteed by specialists employed by Hohner.

Speaker for the board, Helmut Menges said that first experiences are very positive. "Our staff is very pleased by the helpfulness, the effort and the specialized knowledge of our Chinese partners," Menges said. Hohner expects the first fabricating parts and assembly groups to arrive in Trossingen in May to be refined, tuned and assembled. These production processes which raise the value of the instruments will still be offered by Hohner in the future.

I really loooove this model in this bright cream color. My favorite favorite between all the collors.
Actually I don't like the CORONAs and I have a kind of sorrow with them  :-\ I think, cause I feel as Hohner abandoned totally the CLUB line, to focus at the CORONAs. But, I have a positive thinking about the CORONAs so: I always think about any Corona could be a nice introduction for me at the 12bass world (I don't have any 12 bass currently, I would like, and I am always thinking in this model here in the photo, my favorite Corona Color).  ::)

You're cursed! It's all downhill from here. Just wait until Erica meets Erika. How will you explain that?

Well as long as they all know and still get along. I'd say you should count yourself a lucky man! ;-)

Blessed as the religious would say☺️

One last comment the listing here didnt mention if the corona lll RS is a later version of the Corona lll R just a more improved coupler system as I understand it. Was the corona lll RS a replacement of the corona lll R or were they both launched at the same time? Perhaps this is more of a Hohner question.

Thanks!
