Tune of the Month for December 2021: Flatworld
« on: December 01, 2021, 02:57:30 PM »

Hi everyone - this month, a repeat journey for Andy Cutting's famous waltz Flatworld.

Here's a version from the wonderful Mel, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfYVXf2QWlo - and a slowed down version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCNqc_Y2fq8 . An Andy Cutting tune of course.

Having looked up a thread from a while back, Andy wrote this in the upper octave (Em on a D/G) though I know plenty of people play it in the lower octave and fudge that low C. Andy himself says with Blowzabella, he'd play it in the lower octave in Am, though I'm fairly certain that would need accidentals and extra chords to hand.

Enjoy, look forward to hearing your versions of this.

Cheers,

Clive

The same version I did in 2015. Can't really think of anything else to do with this tune!

Great Tufty :-)

I think the 'what else can you do with this tune' will be part of the challenge for those of us who've recorded this before. Not quite sure what to do with it myself; have a couple of thoughts though.

Here's Andy: https://youtu.be/UEYR5F_j7sU
When I listened to Andy's version I was amazed by the speed of it,  He does 57 bars a minute according to my metronome, much faster than I usually hear played out. Seems to me it really works at that pace. Another surprise was his very full. slow  and thick left hand harmonies,  not an um-cha-cha anywhere,  and not the simple chords that appear in the tune books.  So that all makes it more interesting. I
In this video he seems to be playing in the middle row, which would be (DG) A minor fingering, sounding as G minor if it's the CF box to play along with the band.
It's also  written in A minor in the Blowzabella tune book.  This has the advantage of making the chords playable on a 2R8B, where you have the B chord, whereas, if playing in E minor you would need the F# chord.
Feels more natural to me in Em, but early days from an initial try-out.

You'd need a F chord to play it on a D/G in Am, surely? I agree it looks like he's playing middle row, but it's coming out in Em to my ear, presumably being played on a D/G.

I'm playing it in Am on my D/G Dony or Mory with the benefit of the F nats and F chord. Getting there but perhaps not at Andy speed ! I much prefer that to Em - did wonder about Bm.

I certainly remember Andy saying that he rarely plays um cha cha - I'm not a great fan either.

Yes, of course, Clive. I'd forgotten about that F when playing in Am. I could have checked the key by listening instead of just looking, couldn't I!
Still, I almost prefer playing a D chord, for the second chord of the piece,  as I don't really like the feel of dropping down to an F in the melody at the same moment as dropping down to an F in the bass. Bit too nearly parallel.

I'm currently playing thirdless A F D for A1 first three bars, and A D F on A2. Or vice versa
- Not that I'm indecisive...

That's a very good question...  ::)
I have not been through all the former recordings ... here is my try - absolutely fresh recording:

And it's the very first time, that I'm not much too late with it.

It is a lovely tune, and thanks to Mel for the idea of the ‘walking’bass in the first 2 bars of the A music that I used on the 2nd time through.

Here's a brilliant version by a rather young person:

I do like his left-hand arrangement, and amazing clarity of playing.
This will have to be my contribution this month!

That's very nice playing from Bertie Wright :)

Here we go folks, well I recorded this in 2015, and it came out like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGvLZ4LifiY

The trouble is, if I play it, it's one of those tunes that tends to come out exactly the same, so if I played it now, it would sound just the same. I tried it, and it does. So this time I've made a specific effort to reinterpret it, and it's come out as a mazurka. It's slowed down, and the tune's changed quite a bit but - I've kept the chord sequence, anyway!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NutSEPcgnm4

My, the camera isn't kind, is it? Played both times on (the same!) Van der Aa Compact III in G/C.

I didn't get around to recording this last time it was TOTM even though I knew it at the time. So I thought I'd better do it this time; played pretty straight in Em as that's how it's done in sessions, at least in my neck of the woods.

I also didn't do this one last time it was TotM. I vaguely remember it having been TotM previosly, but it might have been around the time I joined melnet and hadn't got my video making act together..
So unencumbered by any kind of duty to do something different with it, I still found myself struggling to beat this one into submission.
A fairly straightforward version, with attempt to make the LH a bit different each of three times though.
