M&M maintainace day. What I'm bringing
« on: March 05, 2009, 10:04:46 AM »

This is the treble end that is giving me trouble

The brass rod just doesn't want to come out so's that I can replace the broken spring on the G row

The rod holds everything in place (Cheap Melodeon)

Those treble actions are a pain to repair.  The axle rod is soft brass, so it easily bends, or breaks while being withdrawn, putting it back is even harder, because it will easily kink under moderate pressure. Last one I did I drilled a hole at the opposite end so I could push the rod out, then replaced the original brass rod with steel. I think its the original throw away treble keyboard.

Theo
I know how hard it is to get at.
I'm considering a rebuild.

I already have a bicycle spoke that I was intending to replace the rod with.

I also have a replacement spring somewhere. If I can find it.

I already have a bicycle spoke that I was intending to replace the rod with.

That's what I've successfully used a couple of times, when sticking wooden keys needed fixing, and I've carefully tapped it through (using a pin hammer) from the opposite end, pushing the brass rod out in the process (though that might not work in all cases).

Mind you, if you only want to replace a spring, it might be easier to use a coiled one, like the Cajun accordion builders do - but you'd need to insert a couple of small pins or screws for it to hook onto.

A coiled one.
Hmmm. How does that work?

You know, it's like the ones you used on the keyboard of your golden box.

Ah ! He's talking about the spring.

He is indeed, and he's even taken apart his two Cajun-built melodeons and photographed them to show you what he means...

This is how Marc Savoy does it, using brass escutcheon pins:

And John Doucet, with panel pins:

Yes I've done that on a one row.

My springs are more internal than that. I did say that this was a "Cheapy" box. ???

Feeling quite pleased with myself today.

Just done some adjusting to the treble end on the one row be built in October.

I was beginning to get a Honer type clacky sound and found out the buttons were sticking when de.pressed.
After dis mounting the treble end. (all the springs came off of course, but they were easy to put back)

I managed to file at an angle the button holes. (Chamforing I think it's called.) so there was better clearance for the buttons. Hey it worked ! ;D Listen :||:
