Random musing- Which animals make up which parts of a box?
« on: March 28, 2014, 09:24:36 PM »

    As far as I'm aware;

    Cow (leather):
    -Straps
    -Valves
    -Bellow straps
    -Bass end strap
    -Leather gussets between the bellows

Where does it come from, for example, on a Castagnari?

    Any more for any more?

Wax - honeybees
Shellac - secretion of the lac insect, used as finish and valve adhesive on older instruments.
Animal glue - horse and cow hide, used in older boxes.
Bone - cow, used as buttons in older I struments.
Wool - sheep, felt in pallets, key stops etc.

Don't eat your melodeon. They are not good for you.

But, if you can have vegetarian shoes (it's a real shop), could you have a vegetarian box? (Assuming felt is available as no sheep were harmed in the production - unless psychologically, but let's not go there, ditto the bees).
And if you could, would it be less environmentally harmful than one made from what is essentially animal by-products? (I'm thinking of those shoes - often made from petroleum and lasting several lifetimes, and not in a good way)

I wonder whether I'm the only one who has ever made a 100% vegan box (for a customer): absolutely no leather anywhere, not even under the pallets or in the bellows! It turned out to be an interesting project and the result wasn't all that bad either if I may say so myself...

Most intrigued - I have thought about this. (not a vegan, just curious. Some say, very curious!). If it's not a trade secret,  8) what material did you use to replace leather?

My first thought would be the gussets - thin, flexible and needs to stay put!  ???

Oh grate - so after the apocalypse the world will be dominated by cockroaches, tesco bags and toy accordions. Just hope the cockroaches don't learn to play the accordions, although the tesco bags might help fix the leaks.

I may be wrong (as usual) but I thought he was expressing surprise and interest, rather than jaded disbelief?
Would Stormy Hyde's melodeons be vegetarian? Unless he has gussets made from softest Kangaroo pouch leather. Snakeskin would seem to be in potentially plentiful supply there - and does that count if the snake has sloughed it?

Bruno Priez' design for a box that people could make in Madagascar using locally available materials used horn (from zébus!) for buttons and pallets: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php?topic=5225.0
