Theme of the Month for April 2014: Hymns
« on: April 01, 2014, 12:41:54 AM »

Simple theme this month folks; hymns from whatever source you like, arranged however you like! There's lots of lovely obscure ones out there on youtube/spotify/etc - pick one and show it off to us!

Cheers,

Clive

Guide me oh thou great Jehovah.

It's even better if you sing the words of "Oh my darling Clementine" to the tune!
All together now,
"In a cavern by a canyon , excavating for a mine....."

Second up, Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken. Apparently the Germans use the tune too.

The Holmfirth Anthem - it's treated as a hymn in Yorkshire.

Last one for now,

Thine be the Glory.  Tune by G F Handel, he used it in his work Judas Maccabeus (Macca to his friends).

I learned the tune, then decided it would be great for the invented Morris dance known as 'Skirmish', hence the Morris like bounce  ;)

not sure if it is classed as a hymn as I don't think it has words but to me its near enough!  -- 'Highland Cathedral'' which I think has something to do with Inverness Cathedral is a lovely tune in D (speed 100) dots are in 'the fourth ceilidh collection''

Others I like are ''light up the fire and let the flames burn'' ( the cremation hymn), ''we shall not be moved'' as sung by the seekers ( the constipation hymn)  Also  sung by the seekers  '' Peace and War'' aka ''Gonna lay down my sword and shield''

Amazing grace is a lovely tune and there are slightly different versions.  Many of may already play ''lord of the Dance'' as a dance tune but it is really a hymn with words.

''Abide with me''  sounds great using the grunters on a one row and is perhaps something useful to have in ones repertoire in case one has the unfortunate job of playing somebody out.

and the words are:

eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn, elf, zwölf, dreizehn
eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn, elf, zwölf, dreizehn
eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn, elf, zwölf, dreizehn
eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn, elf, zwölf, dreizehn

That's what I used to sing when I forgot my hymnal  ;D

The melody was written by Haydn who was, of course, Austrian...

nice, I had this very tune in mind ( stuck in my head from my church going days). I had no idea what the name of it was, so thanks for posting.

edit: to say not the words I remember though in that title. I see this melody has different lyrics.
I remember ( let words of praise be sung by every land by every tongue) at the end or something like that. looking at these words I see why I left now, I'm such a none conformer. It was a Catholic Church, I'll have to ask my dad.

Last one for today,

For All the Saints (who from their labours rest). Apologies for the intonation, The Dino Binci Special needs a 1000 hour retune !  ;)
