After a very close fight, this month's winner is Young Damon's Flight!

The original manuscript is an A#, but Boldwood made the conscious decision to change it to a C#. I prefer the latter, but either is ok.

Ollie: does the 9/4 in the Dancing Master version imply anything about the tempo or was that just how it was written?

As far as I know, that's just how it was written. Someone more well versed in these matters will no doubt correct me!

Don't know if this is useful, but I found another version here: http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/book/JohnWalsh/Young_Damons_flight/0000

The notes are a bit different to the Boldwood version though. (It's in 9/8 rather than 9/4, which looks a bit easier to read!)

Young Damon's Flight was first published in 1717 by J. Walsh and J. Hare in Twenty Four New Country Dances for the Year 1717..dedicated to...Theophilus Earl of Huntington by...Nathaniel Kynaston.
Walsh reprinted the dance in The Second Book of The Compleat Country Dancing Master, 1719; it appears also in the 3rd and 4th editions of The Dancing Master: Vol. the Second, published by John Young in 1718/19 and 1728.

The first source (taken from a copy in the Library of Congress, Washington) gives it in 9/8 in Bm and later sources in 9/4.

I did the music setting for Andrew Shaw's book The She Favourite in 2002 which includes this tune. The attached pdf is of that version. The chording was done by Paul Hutchinson and Paul Sartin of Belshazzar's Feast.

So... Just uploaded my first version of "Young Damon's Flight" - here it is:  http://youtu.be/Y6ahz-DwGlM

Played on my Verde "Venarie" in G/C, in A minor.

I love this tune, great choice for a TOTM! Bit tricky, but fun to play! :-)

Please excuse the silly face expression! I think, it could still get a bit more light and subtle, but at least it's getting stable and is already at danceable speed. Will still experiment with it a little bit, and maybe come up with a different version later this month.

Well done - first up and a more than decent go at it. Still trying to get it into my head but will put one up before the month's out. This will help enormously.

'Bit tricky' - I love the understatement from Stephan. (:) Well played that man! I hope I'm not the only one who's finding it darn near impossible!  :Ph

Thanks Stephan
I'm so pleased you have come onto melnet. Your beautifully exact, complex  and rhythmic playing is a true inspiration.  Your "ciel de Paris" is awesome in its fluency and expressivity while giving a complete account of the harmonic details. (That's not a word I use lightly!)

(Late last night I thought I'd found your  fantastic  Valhermeil, which immediately inspired me to learn it.... but can't find it again in the daylight... was  I dreaming?)

We are privileged to have you join us!  I look forward to listening to more of your many youtubes, whether on box or fiddle.

Still squeezing after all these years.
Mostly on hohners , with a couple of Dinos and a smattering of anglos - and now a Jeffries duet

Thanks a lot for these very kind and encouraging words, all of you!!  (:) ... I don't see myself as such an advanced player, but I love playing diatonic accordion and feel I'm slowly growing into it, even though the fiddle will probably stay my main instrument for a long time.

I'm really happy to be a new member of this friendly and immensely helpful and competent community, will definitely post more tunes and maybe sometimes join into discussions, too. If you need any details on the versions I'm coming up with (chords etc.), just please tell / ask!

Jack, I haven't yet recorded Valhermeil, this must have been someone else (or you might indeed have been dreaming already) - but it's a great tune, I should start learning it properly (even though Bruno LeTron's original F minor version is really tricky, so I'll probably use my standard A minor  ;))

Ok here's what I have so far
Not the best I could do ...but it is what it is
Just can't quite find the right grind that I'm sure is lurking in there somewhere

With the lostness in das Man, the nearest, factical potentiality-ofbeing of Da-sein has always already been decided upon – tasks, rules, standards, the urgency and scope of being-in-the-world, concerned and taking care of things. Das-Man has always already taken the apprehension of these possibilities-of-being away from Dasein.

After a lot of practising, here's my contribution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRz4pss5ORs&feature=youtu.be

I'm aware it could ideally be a bit faster, but that's beyond my current ability! I'm glad I tackled this one though - if nothing else, it's taught me that there's a B flat on my melodeon. (:)

Well done, this really is a difficult tune.
I had planned to do a recording but unfortunately I've run out of time and I'm now travelling for the rest of the month.  I'd looked at trying to maintain the same bellows direction for each group of 3 notes - almost possible on a 2 and half row.

The dance to this tune is quite a complex triple minor affair so I think your speed would match it we'll. I tend to think of it like a tune in 3/2 but with a triplet for each minim.

Seeing as I was the person who nominated it, I suppose I should pop a recording up!

This is pretty no frills really, I've not spent long enough with the tune to make it especially presentable, or had time to do anything interesting with it.

Sounds quite presentable to my ears, Ollie! Lovely arrangement. Was wondering though....you state that it is a 16th cent. tune, it's said elsewhere that it was published in 1700's, so wouldn't it be an 18th cent. tune? BTW, what box were you playing?

Cheers :) Yes, I did mean 18th C, not 16th - brain fart, sorry! It's my D/G Super Erika :)
