Read the fine print on whatever insurance you do purchase: some carriers will not pay a claim if, in their estimation, damage to the package's contents are not reflected by damage to the container.  A package left in the sun on a hot day wouldn't show any damage at all, and there are any number of other scenarios.

Last time I looked, musical instruments were excluded from higher value Royal Mail insurance levels.

Yes, this can be a real beggar, and quite a matter of concern. DHL in my experience seem to be willing to take a bigger risk. :'(

Where did you see this, Tom? I always use Royal Mail Special Delivery and I am not aware of any exclusions for instruments.

The packaging of the instrument is important:

1. Remove the straps and wrap separately in a plastic carrier bag, or similar. This prevents marking of the wooden case of the instrument during transit.

2. Wrap the melodeon in sufficient bubble-wrap or similar, so that it is a snug fit inside its hard case. Ensure the 'feet' of the instrument are towards the hinge of the hard case. Pack the wrapped straps in the angle between the keyboard and the grille as well. The overall aim is to ensure that the melodeon doesn't shift around inside its hard case, but make sure there is no undue pressure on the instrument when the lid is closed. Include a sheet of paper with the recipient's address and your sender's address inside with the melodeon.

3. Secure the case clasps by locking with the key if you have it (don't forget to tie the key to the case handle!), or else a couple of bits of parcel tape will help prevent the clasps opening in the event that the outer packaging (see below) is damaged.

4. You will need a strong cardboard carton about a couple of inches larger than the melodeon hard case. Line the carton inside with bubble-wrap or similar, and place the melodeon in its hard case inside the carton.  Pack all the spaces snugly with bubble wrap. Add another sheet of paper with the recipient's address and your sender's address inside the carton before sealing. Secure all outside seams with lots of brown parcel tape. Finally add the recipients address and your sender's address in at least two places on the outside of the carton. Add the word 'FRAGILE' all over the outside too!

5. Take to the post office and send it off Royal Mail Special Delivery Next Day. You should be given proof of posting with a serial number which should allow you to track the parcel's progress on-line.

Hope this is of use to people.

Hi,
Have just checked out Steves suggestion and the lady contacted confirmed not a restriction for musical instruments on Royal Mail Special Delivery.
Reason given for not been given this info previosly it would seem Parcel Force etc operate as seperate companies and do not share information.

Sorry for scaring everyone
