The clue is in the thread title.....voices and basses. How do they work and what difference they make...anyone got any recorded examples.

Check out Brian Peter's CD "The Beast In The Box".  He does some very handy stuff with a Salterelle 3 voice, where he turns voices on and off here and there for an elegant effect, without loosing himself or the listener in a lot of complex twiddly bits.  He's a very nice fellow also, and if you get to see him live he's worth talking to, and is very generous with his time and expertise.

Brilliant. I've thought of doing that, but my only stop is at the other end of the box. If I really need to change in a hurry I have to stop playing with my RH and jam the thing open/shut and return to the fingerboard to approximately the right note. I've experimented with waiting until I had a decent lot on the push and using my leg to push whilst I use my LH to work the stop. It works sporadically and only if you are sitting down. Unfortunately the weight of my bass is not enough to produce the volume required if I just let it hang whilst still playing a run on the pull. Again if I'm sitting I can jam it between my hand and knee and play like that.

Here's the correct link:

Also, this is where Saltarelles score. To add the lower voices, the stops are pushed IN, which is why the chin method works. On a Castagnari, for example, you have to pull the stops OUT to get the lower voice. I've tried using my teeth whilst playing, but the result was a complete failure and it hurt :( No lasting damage fortunately.

Of course, if you've got a really posh box with switches on the grille or behind the keyboard, it's much easier!

Cool. I thought those 'stops' were just decoration or holding something together. lol!
