« on: April 28, 2014, 09:43:28 PM »

I just snagged 2 pairs of behringer c2's on ebay for the princely sum of $80.

I am looking at a Yamaha MW10 10-Input USB Mixing Studio. Does anyone have any experience with the mixer?

Still figuring out the software but I do have Studio One Free installed. I have also created a VM to look at AVLinux.

Don't know about the Yamaha mixer, except it seems to be a discontinued product.
But if you're thinking of using something like Ardour on AV Linux (good choice, this is coming to you from an AV Linux installation as I type) you don't really need a mixer, you just need a PC interface of some sort. There are lots of simple USB devices that will take 2 mic inputs and send two channels of audio to your computer. Mind you, I don't know if they work out any cheaper than the Yamaha...

By the way, if you want to try AV Linux out, you might be better off running it from the live DVD which you have to create from the downloaded .iso file. Running in a VM may have some problems with USB audio hardware.
Ironically, I'm running AV Linux natively and Windows in a VM on it right now, but that's another story (testing to find the best way of using Melodyne...)

I am using Oracle VirtualBox (free) for my VM's. Windows VM will not support 64 bit on top of 64 bit (Oracle does). The virtualization layer for Oracle VirtualBox has not let me down yet!

Will the PC interfaces supply phantom power to the C2's?

Good point. Some do, some don't - you need to check!
Tascam iUR2 does, for example, though it doesn't seem to have proper XLR connectors so it wouldn't be my first choice.

Looking at what's available, you might be better off with a small mixer with USB.

Oracle Virtualbox here too. I had Windows 7 64 bit running as a guest on Linux 32 bit host!

.. and me - Mint 64 bit, with XP and Win7 and a couple of Centos and Ubuntu servers (although not necessarily all at the same time)

If anyone's still listening (but this is vaguely relevant to recording) I found Melodyne worked best in XP (32 bit) with Virtualbox providing emulation of an AC97 sound chip, and ASIO4all installed. Win7's VM worked with the Intel HD Audio interface but was crackly and had buffer underruns (broken-up sound). ASIO4all broke it completely

I think I'll strip the WinXP VM down to bare minimum and disable networking: it should be safe to use (only as a box to run Melodyne in) for ever then!

That's what I am looking at now. Either a US-122 or US-144. Looking for 2 boxes as I have 2 pairs of mic's. This will mean minimal processing into a software mixer and phantom power for the C-2's, Next on my shopping list is mic stands.

Looks like there are problems with Tascam US-122 and Windows 7 64bit i,e no drivers so my search goes on.

I bought a Presonus FireStudio Project. Its a fire-wire device to bring all inputs to the DAW. Tested it with all 4 microphones (Behringer C2's) tonight and it works great through to Studio One (32 bit WinXP). Very pleased! Now I need to buy some boom mic stands and start configuring the room I will use  ;D

If I can get the fire-wire drivers I will be testing against AVLinux. Will try my midi keyboard through the week also.

.......... I need to buy some boom mic stands .........
I bought some very cheap boom mic stands for a recording a while ago, and now wish I'd rowed the boat out a bit more. It's totally infuriating to have the mic stand droop or fall over when you're trying to position it, or you can't undo it and end up inserting a mic up someone's nose when it self-releases. I know it's tempting to buy cheap when you need four of five stands - mine worked fine for the recording I wanted it for, but having used them a few dozen more times they're tight in the wrong places and floppy in others ... well I suppose it's time for me to buy some better ones eh?

Cheap can be cheerful without necessarily being naff; Thomann do a range of very serviceable stands starting from as low as €9.40. OK, they're very basic and not desperately elegant but they're tough and they work. They stock 138 different stands ranging up to €351 apiece, so there should be something suitable in there.....

Among others, Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G; assorted Hohners; 3-voice German (?) G/C of uncertain parentage; lovely little Hlavacek 1-row Heligonka; B♭/E♭ Koch. Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........
