"Dreaming"
« on: May 11, 2014, 11:26:44 AM »

Hi,

I stumbled on this tune in an ABC collection, with no particular indication of where it originated.  I've had a little search around, but trying to search for something called "dreaming" is pretty much impossible except within a very narrow context.   Several tune finders show it in exactly the same form, even the same incomplete chord notation, suggesting they were all direct copies of the same ABC.

What struck me is that the tune seems to sort of lose its way after the first 32 bars, making me wonder if it's been mistranscribed or simplified.  Has anyone come across a different version?  I also want change the harmony, that G major to B major change is very strong, but to me it should appear when tune returns to the original theme, not every time those two melody bars appear.

I think this has been transcribed from an old book called Folkestra, I have a score in five parts that is played by the concertina band I'm in. I'm not sure if there are any copyright issues with the tune but I'll get back to you. In the meantime I'll check the version you have against the copy I have to see if there are any transcription errors but I can't check the chords as my copy doesn't have them.

I can tell you straight away that it's a 32 bar tune so anything after that has been added!

Cheers.  I'm not totally surprised, maybe the rest is a poorly remembered note of someone's improvisation.

Googling "Folkestra Tune Book" found this entry in a list of music books donated to a library.

Folkestra Tunes
a collection of traditional dance tunes compiled and arranged by Guy Crawford,
Timespan Music, 1994

So I think there will be copyright issues connected to the arrangement but not the melody line, here's the ABC.
