Charlie Harris on tg4
« on: December 06, 2007, 08:46:34 PM »

You can watch a lot of Irish music TV programmes over at tg4.ie (the Irish language channel). In the most recent one in the Geantrai series you can catch some nice Anglo-concertina playing from Claire Keville and Jacqueline McCarthy, but also a rare glimpse of Charlie Harris playing one of those lovely old black Paolo Soprani boxes.

In Irish circles you often hear Charlie Harris' name mentioned as a tuner and C#/D player but you don't often get to hear him.

Go to http://tg4.ie, click on the webTV button, and when the console appears, click Ceol - Cartlann in the menu at left. Choose Geantrai 2/12/2007 and you're away.

Charlie Harries appears at about 6 min 20. He doesn't look altogether happy to be on camera, it has to be said. Incidentally he gives an eloquent demonstration of the no-fourth-finger-style of playing - just so you know I'm not making it all up.  ;) And astonishingly, banjo player Des Mulkere, who appears on those clips of Joe Cooley just before Cooley died, looks possibly younger than he did in 1973.

Dave Hennessy on tg4 too
« Reply #1 on: December 07, 2007, 08:33:39 PM »

The 18/11/2007 edition of the same program is hosted by Dave Hennessy, well-known melodeon (in the Irish sense of the word) player. He plays an intriguing box - like an old-style one-row, complete with stoppers, bellows divider and spoon basses - except that it's a two-row, and appears to have four spoon basses instead of two. Anybody know more about this type of instrument?

It sounds great, at all events. I think even those who don't like mainstream (reel-dominated) Irish music will enjoy the Cork / Kerry tunes on this program.

A STREB!!,
2.5 D/G Self made Emmanuel Pariselle, D/G Pokerwork,
and Wolverton Advanced G/D Anglo Concertina and C/G  1937 Wheatstone.
all played "lefty" with mostly an extra air button, except the Concertinas which I play the conventional way round.

If you mean the first tune played by Dave Hennessy, no, except that it's a slide.

If you were referring to the Charlie Harris clip, they start with The Collier's reel.
