Theme of the Month for June 2014: Jigs
« on: May 31, 2014, 10:38:10 PM »

At Pikey's excellent suggestion, a nice simple theme this month, jigs. we've had 32 bar jigs and 48 bar jig themes, but this month we open it up to *anything*. 32 bar jigs, 48 bar jigs, 29.5 bar jigs, fast jigs, slow jigs, Morris jigs, anything.

Have a good one; let's see how we do! I'd like to politely encourage everyone to have a go, even if you don't think you're very good, or that your effort could be better. Well, in answer to the first point, you're better than you think you are, and there are always interesting things to be picked up from any video, regardless of ability - little things you're doing that you're not even aware of which others will find interesting and pickup on. And in answer to the second point, yes, of course it can always be better, but as a chap I used to work with me said to me in one of his wiser moments, the perfect is the enemy of the good! A good (or even a bit rough) recording is a thousand times better than a perfect effort that is never quite finished and recorded.

So... Off you go;let's see if we can get a good healthy number of contribs this month...

Cheers,

Clive

It's a bit of an old recording but here's one of me playing Walter Bulwer's version of 'Off She Goes'. It's a quirky tune which has a single 9/8 bar at the start of the B-music. Serious melodeon face as usual...

The video was made by Darren (Dazbo) of this forum.

Suspended Slip Jig written by Julian Sutton.  One of my favourite tunes to play, but very hard to play completely clean (for me anyway!).

Really enjoyed that slip-jig, Pete!  (:)  Added that to my must learn list, which is getting longer every day. Here's one I decided to record, first heard this back in the '70's being played on the harp by Alan Stivell (I was an aspiring harper back then). It's a chance to record my D/G Castagnari Lilly, and also to try out a pair of new microphones. The Lilly is coming along, certain things can be played more quickly, but sometimes I get stymied by the closeness of the buttons and then things go astray. Here is Morrison's Jig

Here we go again, a couple of Slides (complete with mistakes and slightly mad speed as instructed by Clive), must go out now ...

Kathleen O'Hehir's slide and one I can't remember the name of.

How's about:

[

Zuppa Inglese

A bit wrong at the end of the C part there Lester. Your version seems to add an extra half bar to the 48 bars.
Here's how it should be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04N851Uuffc

Two recordings in one day ..
May I ask, what format are your sound files in Andy?  I've often wondered what you sound like and I approve of off the cuff recordings but my annoyingly over prescriptive handheld devices are stopping me listening, I need to look for a workaround.  Thank you.

Ah, maybe you've been spared, just as I've been spared from listening to anything on Soundcloud ...

Um, serious answer  ::)

The format is Ogg Vorbis, pretty straightforward to play on a full computer these days, but some devices (usually older ones since newer, or generic, ones seem to cope even if their advertising/instructions don't mention it) don't play them.

Anyway, just for you, I've relented (slightly ... harumph ...  ;) ) and uploaded mp3 versions as well. The mp3s are at a lower bitrate than the Ogg Vorbis files, 128kbps, and at a constant bitrate since I believe that will make them as compatible as possible with recalcitrant hardware.

Where are the files? Just replace .ogg at the end of the file name with .mp3 when downloading (or streaming) and you'll get them.

Bah, turns out I can't play jigs when it comes to recording them, but I did manage to scrape together a half decent attempt at Jenny Pluck Pears:

I want to do more with the basses but I've not really figured out what yet. I'm fed up of trying to record anything better today though, so that'll have to do ;D

Had a slightly more successful evening and managed a quick bash through Atherfield: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhnYWZulszs
I learnt it with lots of row crossing originally and I think I want to relearn it more on the row to get some funkier rhythm going, or otherwise improve my pacing anyway.

YouTube has also been entertaining me today by stabilising these videos, which makes for a really weird effect where the melodeon doesn't really move much. Found the button to turn it off now though ::)

Some more :

Tiger Smiths, often known as Oscar Woods, played as Oscar played it, not the Rod Stradling version that is usually played. Spot the incredible syncopation, Oscars invention, not mine.

The Ampleforth Sword Dance tune aka Lass of Dallowgill

A different version of Lass of Dallowgill from North Skelton via George Tremain, followed by Bean Setters Morris dance tune :

Old Woman Tossed up in a Blanket:

Dearest Dickie:

And finally (for now), Woodland Flowers (Alexander Prince version) and Bob Cann's Uncle Jim's

As you can tell, I love jigs  ;)
