Tune of the Month for June 2014: Jack Robinson
« on: May 31, 2014, 10:44:40 PM »

I trust you'll forgive me calling time on the vote an hour early or so, but I think it's pretty clear who the winner is, don't you? I'm *so* glad this one won; it's an absolute cracker. A tune which I hadn't heard before Squeezy and Jon made it a core part of one of their sets, but I've always assumed it was traditional, isn't it? Does anyone know where it comes from?

It's a straight up and down the G row tune this; no tricks or clever fingering needed; just set it running, and *feel* it!

Happy playing!

Clive

And there we have it; demo video, abc notation and notes on the tune origin all in one little link! Thanks Lester - you're a treasure!

Some of us played it long before that famous duo played it a tad faster than I prefer ... ;)

I learned it from the ECMW sessions way back in 1978.

Here's my version

Still squeezing after all these years.
Mostly on hohners , with a couple of Dinos and a smattering of anglos - and now a Jeffries duet

Hurrah, a tune I actually haven't found too tricky to learn. I may have cheated and practiced/recorded a version a couple of days ago as I saw it was very likely to win. I'm going to keep practicing it this month and see how much I can improve it before doing a video, but here's my current version:

Another bit of origins -

The tune Jack O'Robinson, notated as a hornpipe, is in the Clive Carey manuscripts in The Full English archive.
http://www.vwml.org/record/CC/1/527

It as collected from William Lemming in Terwick, Sussex in 1911.

I've attached my transcription from that source.

Clearly the same tune as the polka version attributed to William Tilbury in Surrey.

Aha! I'd learnt this prematurely a few months ago when I was convinced it had to be chosen for the Totm - what a jolly tune.
Played in my usual sloppy fashion in Eb on a Liliput, which is clearly way too small for my sausage fingers.

I seemed to have picked up an accidental hop across to the D/Bb row in bar 4 - I thought I'd been following Lester's version but  suppose it must have come from an ABC I downloaded.

Here's one I did earlier
complete with source info as well.

There may be another version in the pipeline, of the same two tunes played by my band...

As per the admonition on another thread about just recording stuff, posting it and not looking (listening) back ... here is a recording caught "in the wild" this morning.

A tune which I hadn't heard before
Clive

IIRC it entered the English revival repertoire (like so much else...) after it appered on Old Swan's No Reels....may be wrong, vinyl is packed away somewhere.

Cracking tune no matter from whence it came...

Folkbluesnbeyond...lovely to hear it on a one row, it's given me the courage to give it a whirl on my new organetto in D. Practically broke me in half  trying to learn last months 'When the king comes to his own again' on it.....and I failed  :||: :|bl :Ph :|glug

Here's a quick recording of Jack O'Robinson from the Clive Carey manuscripts in The Full English archive.
http://www.vwml.org/record/CC/1/527

It's in G rather than the original C and there's quite a bit of key clatter probably due to a hastily positioned microphone.

I think it's a Saltarelle Pastourelle III, Roger, if I remember correctly from watching Mitch's other videos :)

Sorry, I didn't put titles on the video.  Yes it's a Saltarelle Pastourelle III in D/G.  Here played with all 3 reeds on and thirds out on the left hand.  It's recently been tuned by Theo of this parish.
