Shipping costs
« on: June 21, 2014, 09:55:04 AM »

I know we moan on about these but I've been noticing an increasing number of US people offering "fully duty paid, no extra costs" international shipping both on fleabay but also a couple of musical instrument vendors.
Just for amusement, I ran a transaction through a handy duty calculator system we have here to see how it compared with just forking out on arrival. They quoted me the thick side of $1000 for duty and taxes (on top of shipping) compared to the actual tax payable of just over $500 (Kiwi). So someone is trousering $500. It may not (in fact probably isn't) the seller, but still ... I thought it might be more, I wasn't expecting it to be double.
Anyway, just putting that out there in case anyone else comes across it when buying from the US.

Yes, I've looked at one or two items (not just musical ones) offering that same "deal" and done similar calculations with similar results.

Among others, Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G; assorted Hohners; 3-voice German (?) G/C of uncertain parentage; lovely little Hlavacek 1-row Heligonka; B♭/E♭ Koch. Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........
