I've really struggled with this one.  Not a tune I'd ever heard before, I had a few false starts and eventually gave up trying to play rhythmically.  So here is my attempt played slowly and trying to add a few more interesting chords (thirds out and there's even a Gmaj7 in there somewhere).  Cheers.  N

Well done Nigel - it was nice to hear a different take on this, and very smoothly played.

This is me trying to be Martin Ellison:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYVt6rj-Vmg&feature=youtu.be

Needless to say it sounds nothing like, but I learnt a lot while trying.

All of which makes it a shame that ToTM postings seem to be tailing off a bit.  I really enjoy listening to all the different versions from beginners to advanced players.  Come on fellow citizens of melnet-land, can we have a few more ToTM postings please?  :|||: :||:

I must admit that I haven't made much of an effort this month as I'm afraid I don't really like this tune that much. I suspect there are others like me who are learning so many new tunes every month that there's often no time to put aside for a tune that you don't personally enjoy. Not to take anything away from the recordings everyone else has made, as they're all great, but I'm just not very enthusiastic about this one :-\

I think that's a great attempt at playing in the upper octave with added twiddlies and a bit of machine gun index finger, well done. Keep practicing that and it will soon be very good indeed!

I felt exactly the same about this tune - it didn't inspire me to have a go at all. But now, having heard what some have done with it, I would love to have a go. Sadly I can't because I have had to send my melodeon off for repair! Oh well..... >:(

Thank you very much Pete.  I think that is why TOTM is such a good idea - I had never tried playing up that high before (my family and the dog probably wish I never had).

And it is only when you attempt to play a tune the same way that one of your melodeon heroes plays that you realise quite what a brilliant player they are.  You're playing all the same notes but it sounds nothing like their version, as it's not the notes but all the other bits - the accents, spaces, phrasing, twiddles, relaxed sounding style, and all the other indefinable stuff that makes their playing what it is.  Good to have something to aim for though.

Haha Spikey! No, just my Tommy.

I decided to spend the time, without the Tommy, to explore my old Pre Pokerwork in C/F, which I have neglected somewhat. Glad to be doing this as I have found some of the tunes I played in D/G sound bloody marvelous on the C/F. The Sweetness of Mary for example, lovely, just lovely. Also trying to learn accompaniments for some songs, which I have never done before.  :||:

Oh yes, all of that. These are the delimiters that separate us from our heroes. On the upside these are the things that spur us on and give us goals to aim for, we may never get there but there's a hell of a lot of fun to be had by trying!  ;D

It's a pleasant enough tune, but I'm struggling to play it as a waltz. Yes, it's in 3/4, and it makes a lovely Varsoviana, or Ländler, or even a Mazurka, but the shape of the tune just won't allow that lovely smooth, flowing one-pulse-to-the-bar with a negligible offbeat that constitutes a waltz. I think it's probably the effect of the quaver pairs at the ends of so many bars.
Kept thinking about this for some weeks. Today I had an idea: Try to give a rhythmic accent after each quaver or sequence of eighth notes.  >:E

That's really good! That emphasis does make a difference even though it is subtle - all that's needed really!

I hope you are not offended in any way, but I listened to your recording 3 times on really good headphones and found the 5th note of the piece, which is a 'B' and occurs several times throughout the tune, sounds out of tune to me. It might be worth checking, if you have a tuner.
I hope you don't mind me saying so.

The whole instrument is ca. 2 cents flat (measured to a'=440Hz, equal temperament). The A (it’s a C/F-box) you mention is about 4 to 5 cents flat, so it is not really out of tune for not so sensitive ears. ;) The beating of the two reeds is normal, too.

Beginner alert  :o First time posting anything on here, and first time uploading to YouTube too. I've been playing my Hohner Corona II for just over a week (thanks Theo) and this is the first tune I've learnt on it. Really excited about this melodeon business  ;D
