Tough buttons
« on: March 25, 2009, 06:12:48 PM »

Hello.....I am a newbie to this site, and I don't know how many times these questions have already been discussed, but here goes:
:P I recently bought a slightly used 1 row four-stop Weltmeister in C. It's a pretty good box for what I gave, great volume, solid bass, responsive reeds, etc. My difficulty is that the buttons have rather tough springs, making  playing fast or ornaments very difficult. I have been playing two and three row instruments for about 12 yrs, and this is my first one row box. Are the button springs generally tougher on these, or do I just have an odd one? Can the springs be "relaxed" without fatigue-ing the steel spring wire? Any thoughts would be welcome, and best to all...........  JWF

Actually, if the springs were too soft, playing fast and ornaments would be very difficult!

Four stop boxes tend to need stiffer springs to provide enough pressure to get the very large pallets to seal.

Thanks for this , Theo.....you would think after 40+ years of construction work, my hands would be strong enough! Looks like I'll have to pump iron for a bit ;D......jwf

I've found that playing my one row 4 stop provides serious 'circuit training' for the fingers of the right hand, and has certainly helped to strengthen the 'weaker' fingers.

And I really notice the benefit when moving back to a 'normal' two row. Bit like switching from wearing walking boots to slippers.

That's why I would like a one row. One of the many instruments that I would like, and one of the many instruments that I will not get :P

Changing footwear has a profound effect on the sound from the rhythm section which has been known to accompany my playing. Bit like a drummer changing sticks.

I have used one of these

to strengthen my fingers. Was really good when I had a 2 hour motorway commute, strengthen one hand whilst steering with the othere

Lin

Heard something about this on the radio the other day - they said the county remains, but they're doing a local authority carve up... East Cheshire and West Cheshire... in the process swallowing all the little authorities, such as Macclesfield... The democratic concensus behind it appears to be zilch - they had a local authority bigwig on the article to defend the authority line... in fact, he sounded frighteningly like Sir George Parr to me... ;D

However, as Andy fears, the county may disappear... from the recent authority carve up's they did (e.g. Telford and Wrekin), the map books now seem to count these mickey mouse fiefdoms as proper counties... gawd knows why... ::)

Does this mean that the Cheshire Waltz will now have to be re-named? :D

what about the cheese  Huh?

I don't think renaming The Cheshire Waltz as 'The Cheese' would be very popular in either East or West Cheshire ;D

Red and White Cheshire?
That sounds like Russia in 1917.
Trust an Irish resident to stir things up, even if he really is from Burton on T'rent. ;)

The thought had already crossed my mind, and I'm sure they have a few Czars, commissars and apparatchiks in the administration too!  ::)

There's also Blue Cheshire, though you wouldn't come across it much...

Well Staffordshire is the next county down, and I did get me clogs in Stockport, so maybe I can claim something resembling a little local knowledge?

But the correct form is either Burton-on-Trent or Burton upon Trent - which is something for which I can quite definitely claim local knowledge!  :P
