Obsession
« on: July 20, 2014, 05:42:10 PM »

I went into a cafe in Kings Heath yesterday and this was on the side.  Straight away the thought went through my mind, flippin heck that's ornate, must be for the Italian market, I wonder how many basses.

I think it has 8 basses. It uses a unique drawer system for the reeds and servicing. Very nice, but quite heavy.

If it has been tuned properly, there should be a distinct 'clack' to every key press, and a unique 'ker-ching' intermittedly when playing...  >:E

Given its age, if it is from the UK, it probably uses an archaic tuning system with one octave having 12intervals, and the other having 20 intervals.

I would not advise anybody called A,A,Ar, Arkwright to try and p,p,p, play one. You will be better of with an Emmanuel.

They've a reputation for needing a really good pull to get much in the way of notes out.

Nothing from Q - hope he's not been detained inspecting its internals..................

Now there's a sound rarely associated with melodeon playing . . .

It will probably be in the old LSD tuning.

This thread had not registered on me Till now.
As I recall, on a good day they seemed to get heavier to play. It's rumoured that Johnny Cash had one.
Out of print now is a whole treatise on the machine by Ezra Pound.

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Any takers for this "type" of melodeon?
Think it's known as a qwertybox....

To turn this around .. I've seen several people "typing memos" on their melodeons in the "free improvisation" sessions at Chichillienne. With the right lead in or visual punch line it can be very entertaining. Similarly saxophone bells get used as HMV style record players:|glug
