Hot New Publication from Spinningpath Music!

This is a chord book for the right hand on your D/G melodeon. You’ll find chords in every key from A♭to G shown as clear simple “where to put your fingers” diagrams. In addition to the chords, there are also numbered diagrams which show the scale for each key and how we might play at least part of them on the D/G melodeon.

And there is also a step by step music theory section explaining how chords are constructed, the three chord trick, major and minor scales and key signatures etc. It’s all written in plain and simple layman’s terms with illustrative examples for you to play on the melodeon.

So when someone starts playing a song or tune in a key other than G or D you now have another option apart from putting your melodeon down!

B/C! That might take a bit of thinking about  :D

There are others in the pipeline (C/F, G/C or A/D and ultimately the mighty ADG and GCF) but which to do next?

I can't decide, you all tell me!

Question for Ed.

As Melodeons are all 2 or 3 voice, does each reed making up a  "note" give perfect interval with the next reed up or down. i.e. Each L reed is an exact tone or semitone from adjacent L reed, etc etc. Just wondered, for no particular reason.

I have had violin players say that they don't like tuning off a melodeon because notes aren't "pure".

Book is excellent introduction to music theory BTW.

In standard tuning of a two reed box one reed is tuned to pitch and the other reed is tuned sharp by a number of 'cents' to give the melodeon sound. The greater the number of cents the sharp reed is tuned away from the pitch reed the 'wetter' the sound. Therefore a standard tuned melodeon will always appear to a perfect pitch person to be sharp as the ear will perceive the note as half way between the pitch and off pitch reed.

The way around this is to tune in the Viennese style where the reeds are tuned either side of desired pitch thus providing the melodeon sound but the ear peceives the correct pitch.

If a box has LMM reeds the L is normally tuned to pitch.

Nice work Lester!

If anyone ever wants a note from my Hohners, I always say "take your pick!".

And Martin thank you for your kind comment about the music theory bit of the book. I hadn't originally intended it to be quite so extensive, but just growed and growed like Topsy.

Fiddle players do sometimes not like tuning to a wet tuned box, not only because of what Lester describes,  but more just because of the tremolo beats in the melodeon sound.   When fiddle players tune to another instrument they will usually tune their instrument so they hear no beat, which means that the two instruments are in tune.  If the box has a tremolo tuning that makes the fiddlers task that much more difficult.  So if asked by a fiddler for a note to tune to the ideal would be to play a single reed sound, or next best a dry tuned box.

It would really help me if you did come up with ' Chords for one row' on the treble side; arthritis is rapidly knocking out my left hand..... :||: :-[

Brian - PM me with the key of your box and (importantly) the notes that button 1 plays on pull and push respectively and I'll knock a chart up for you.

But back to the question I posted earlier. Which next, G/C, C/F or A/D?

ADG gets my vote. For the other two row quint instruments all you have to do is transpose the chords in the book you've already done.

Suggest you put this into a text document, sort out the formatting and then post it as an attached file.

Thank you Lester. Much tidier.

Obvious to those who know, but should explain to uninitiated that the columns of note combinations should have been headed with :-

Tonic  1st Inversion  2nd Inversion 3rd Inversion

If readers don't know what that means, suggest you buy Ed's new book where all is explained.

Silly question, probably, Ed, from someone who doesn't read music or know much (any??  :-\ ) theory. Will it matter whether ones melodeon is a 3rd or 4th button start, when  reading your diagrams?

Thanks, Lynne
