The ships cook
« on: July 27, 2014, 10:41:13 PM »

I've been 'reseching' some regency frocks for jane austen festival. ;)
And I came across this tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyHJztZG8FM The Ships Cook (dance).
I wondered if anyone had the dots for it? Or knew if it was possible to play on melodeon?

A speed search of my personal abc collection and all of the usual haunts turns up nothing which isn't a good sign. Perhaps one of our clever transcribers can help, good luck with it!

Yes, that is it!  ;D

And it’s really easy to play on a melodeon, too.  :M

The last note in the third measure is an Eb. But it should be notated as an E natural. In fact, as the piece is in dorian mode you can do without the Eb at the beginning of each line.

In the last measure of the sixth line they forgot the chord notation "G minor".

In the last line of page 1 I would bring forward the "D minor" half a measure. On an D/G-box this would give for the first page:

Ooh, thank you. Just glancing at it, the only bit I'm not sure on is the middle bit with 3 notes at once. But then I don't usually play tunes with that as an element. lol! Something to try.

The three note chords look like an accompaniment to another instrument playing the tune - at a first glance they are following the same chord sequence.

From the text instructions "add violin part", "flute solo" it looks like the score you have there is part of an arrangement for a small group or band and may not be complete.

No, the notes are not complete to render the piece in the Youtube video. But the whole thing consists only of small variations to this basic antetype. So the notes, the Viking presented, will give you a good start.

If you compare the notes to the YT-video you see, that there is a chordal-rhythmical section which is, I think, well captures in the notation. As the structure is so easy, it may be an invitation to try to improvise a little bit? (:)

I like this a lot. I hope some one will pop up and play it so that I can learn it by ear as I don't have the kit for ABC...where are you Lester and Pikey when I need you? ;)

You could use the ABC-Converter at mandolintab.net. Just copy the abc-code into the page. It will display the abc as musical notation. Than you can click at "midi" and hear it with a midi player (e. g. Winamp).
