What tunes are you currently learning?
« on: July 31, 2014, 10:19:25 AM »

I assume there are others like me who have a massive list of tunes they're learning at any time which might not see the light of day for quite a while, so I figured it might be interesting to list what we're currently working on as it might turn up some interesting tunes that we otherwise wouldn't come across.

Almost learnt fluently:

  • Le Petit Chien - Andy Cutting tune which is just really fun. I managed to acquire the sheet music via Paul James of Blowzabella, I think it's free to be shared around.
  • The Weasel's Revenge - finally almost finished it after hearing Noodle play it in a session. Also by far the best name for a tune.
  • Zelda - Funky french tune by Philippe Plard. Really fun to play.
  • Flatworld - Another tune by AC, just working on the B part now.
  • Y Fenyw Fwyn - Welsh version of Roslyn Castle, also played by squeezy (name translates to Gentlewoman, which is what it's called on a S&B album). Haven't quite got the B part how I like it yet, and as I learnt at the Adderbury folk night a week or so ago I get completely stuffed by the larger button spacing if I try it on the Pokerwork :D

Still very much learning:
  • Quinn Darrow Hornpipe - Heard Sandy play this again recently and it's a great upbeat tune.
  • 13th Century Ductia - My mandolin teacher also plays gurdy so we're experimenting with the melodeon and gurdy together playing a couple of 13th C tunes. This one's pretty cool and I've got the ABC if anyone's curious.
  • Christy Barry's/Heidi Hendi - I'm convinced there's some wizardry going on in this AC performance because I can't get it to sound even vaguely like this. Yet!
  • Josefin's Dopvals - I'm finding this really awkward in D on a two row. It's a great tune though.
  • Flowers of Edinburgh - Attempting to figure it out from Tony Hall's, ukebert's, and Sandy's versions and I've figured out about two bars so far.

EDIT: I'm getting constant 403 errors trying to post this, posting one line at a time. Is there a limit on the number of links you can post in one topic?

Right, 3 links seems to be the limit before the forum falls over and gives me an uninformative error, so here's the remaining 3:

Still very much learning:
The tune is Quindaro (not Quinn Darrow). I only say in case anyone is searching for info about it.

Since John Kirkpatrick's Find The Lady came up in the poll for next month's ToTM, I thought I'd have a go at learning it properly. I've known it forever, but it's one of those tricky tunes that full of bits that are very similar but not quite the same, and you have to sit down and work at it to get them all right.

Trunkles Delight by John Goodluck, (unless he purloined it).

For fear thread drift may be suggested, the melodeon comes in at about 1.56.

Could as easily have been posted in the neglected boxes thread, the G/C only has occasional excursions into use. This seemed an appropriate occasion.

Still a work in progress!

Cannot seem to get the hang of only playing the basses on one and three and the quick switch backs at the end of this tarantella. Getting closer every day though... :|||:

I have a Morris side tune book of about thirty tunes to get my head around. Of which two I could play.

I am a BC player and don't do much with chords

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSZDWVj-B6A

Canyon Moonrise by the late mandolinist John McGann. Beautiful waltz with interesting chords (on piano). The melody plays well on BC button accordion.

Homage a Phillipe Bruneau: A  beautiful Quebeqois waltz. I have a bit of trouble with some of the phrases but it is starting to come together.

The Month of November: Another beautiful French Canadian three part waltz.  Some of the phrases jump around a bit at speed but I think I can eventually get this.

Reel Medley: Galopede (two part version), Petronella, Green Mountain Petronella:  Petronella gives me the most trouble because the fingering requires some jumping around on the B part. Still working it.

Jigs medley:  Fiddle Hill, East to Glendart, Coffee.  I keep working on these to get them to dance speed.  So far it is slow going. If anyone would like the sheet music, I can send it.  All the best

Charlie

Am trying the Old Swan set, Rose Polka and JBMilne.
The Rose Polka has a thread all on it's own somewhere and it's a cracking tune but does streeeetch your mind and fingers. It uses 3 of the 4 accidentals I've got and requires bellows reversals.
Getting there, so long as wind in right direction  (:)
It will take me a time to get fluent, but I'll persevere.

googled for 'rose polka' which didn't ring a bell here and … accidentally ;) happened upon its counterpart in horticultural circles!

Same name in reverse! Sez that it smells of pepper and spice.

Hi Chris,
Take a look here...
http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,14079.0.html

I remember the thread at the time but did no more. A chap played it at a session a few weeks back and a light went on in my head.
It's a lovely tune but is a brain acher, which is good for me!
It'll help me improve I'm sure, as it really gets yer fingers around the chin buttons.
Needs to be in D though as the G version needs the accidentals up the fingerboard which is impossible on a 2 row D/G.
With your choice of weaponry you have choices!

Hommage a Philippe Bruneau: A  beautiful Québécois waltz. I have a bit of trouble with some of the phrases but it is starting to come together.

Hi Charlie! As luck would have it I found myself sitting opposite the composer of this tune, box player Guy Loyer, in a session at a festival last weekend. According to the musician sitting next to me - a member of one of the first "revival" bands of Québec in the 1970s, who curiously enough divides his time between D/G and B/C systems - Guy Loyer survived 20 years of being a student of Bruneau (a considerable feat given Bruneau's legendary, er, abrasive personality).

According to this site (http://www.mustrad.udenap.org/tounes/TQ329_hommage_a_philippe_bruneau.html) M. Loyer calls the tune "La Valse Philippe" in honour of his mentor, but everyone else has taken to referring to it as "Hommage à Philippe Bruneau" (two Ms in French and of course the H is silent).

Have you considered playing the tune in C to get a different pulse, approaching the way it would be played by the composer?
