A bagpipe air and march written during world war 2.

Played in memory of my grandad, who was in the Pioneer Corps attached to the Royal Armoured Corps, in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Greece, including El Alamein, Anzio, Palermo, and Monte Cassino.

The 51st Highlanders Farewell to Sicily.

And finally (thank goodness, I hear you say.....)......

A selection of tunes from world war 1, all popular songs with british soldiers:

The Bells of Hell (learned from my friend Billy Harrison who was in the trenches )

Hanging on the old barbed wire

Mademoiselle from Armentieres (parley vous)

Goodbye, Dolly Gray. Initially popular in the Boer War, revived in the Great War

And here's a recording of it from 1901.

I've posted this before, for the Tune of the Month a while back, but here it is again.

Here's my offering.  I love this Scottish and Irish traditional song, which goes back to 1605 at least. - the words seem to be just stacked full of real meaning about what it must have been like to be a young conscript.  Just as true today, I'd guess.

I think Battle of the Somme was the TOTM when I first came onto Melnet and I've never got round to playing it till now.  Here's an attempt for this month's theme.
Edit - 14th August. I realised after posting that I'd got the timing wrong.  :|bl Thank you though, Ellisteph for the nice comment.  Here's a second attempt:

Edit 21st August. I've now deleted the first ('wrong') version from YouTube.

Here's one that's played in the States quite a bit, but usually by fiddlers, so I gave it a go on the Hohner Erika:

                 Bonaparte's Retreat

(followed by Malcolm's rendition of Blackadder, the perennial encore.) ;)

My first submission for Theme of the Month.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLLxpFrnGpk&feature=youtu.be

I'm afraid it's another attempt at Battle of the Somme but I found this melody so compelling I couldn't let it go. It is the slow version - I just couldn't reconcile the title with anything jaunty. I have looked at the discussion when this tune was Tune of the Month (2010) and realise not everybody shares this view.

Have also had a stab at making a video to enhance(?) it.

Thanks for looking.

Very sensitively played with an evocative video. Well done.

Here's a couple of tunes that I've enjoyed learning/playing over the past week or two:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z4sTbDP8xo

Thaxted, which is a cracker, isn't it? Thanks for Ollie's version for bringing it to my attention, though I must confess I haven't listened to Ollie's version since trying to learn this, so hopefully we've diverged our versions a bit. Link to this theme? It's the tune to 'I Vow to Thee My Country', a hymn frequently sung at remembrance services.

Flowers of the Forest (great idea Matt... thanks!); an old Scottish lament written to commemorate the fallen at Flodden in 1513, and used in Commonwealth remembrance services where it is often known as simply 'the lament'.

Flowers of the Forest is often played only for remembrance and funerals, rather than as a performance piece. I would say this theme, and the centenary it commemorates certainly counts as remembrance.

It got lost when I transferred to Soundcloud from the other website that was discontinued.  Good heavens, that was four years ago!

Figured I'd jump on the Battle of the Somme bandwagon and give it a go too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKAeBaVK-o0. Not perfect but the best I managed to record earlier; I'm still struggling to record without loads of mistakes, and I probably need to learn more variations too :D
