Leveret

Not sure if anyone else has come across this new trio of Andy Cutting, Rob Harbron, and Sam Sweeney, so figured it might be worth posting:

I really like the combination of instruments and it's very nice to listen to. Anyone know what the two (?) tunes being played are? I've never heard either of them before but I'd be interested in learning them.

I heard Leveret earlier this year and was utterly blown away. They have recorded an album and it will be coming out I think at the beginning of 2015. Cannot wait.

The first is a 3/2 Hornpipe which I can't recall the name of, the second is the Blewbell Hornpipe.

Ooh, didn't know there was an album coming; I'll look forward to that. I can't find any other videos on YouTube and very few people tour in South Wales so I unfortunately miss out on most live gigs (unless I'm back in Oxfordshire at the right times), but this video is one of my current top favourites to listen to.

There's a couple more on Sam Sweeney's channel, here:

... and this one, which I think is the same set:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoF1UJniIrc

... which makes the first one Sylvia's Serenade.

There's also this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR6DQqqZvic

which is the piece I've been listening to lots over the past few days - this is "just" Rob Harbron and Sam Sweeney, playing a slow Morris jig style piece, as part of a house concert with Fay Hield - their instrumental set. They're not just good players, they're fine musicians with an amazing musical ear.

Ah ha, thanks Clive! Haven't managed to find any ABC for Sylvia's Serenade so I might have a bash at learning by ear, it doesn't sound too tricky.

If I remember correctly I think Sam also plays English Concertina (as do numerous musicians in Bellowhead I think). It's not an instrument I see too often in groups aside for accompanying singers, so it's really nice to see Rob in this group as I think it adds a really nice mellow sound to the mix.

I think I've figured out the A part though I'm a) not sure what key it's actually in, so I've written it in C, and b) never written anything in 3/2, so it's a bit of a guess.

If anyone has any tips then that'd be grand, I'll try to figure out the B part this evening.

Edit:

I always suck at waiting and had to finish it now. I'm not sure if this is right or not, as the B part seems to be a bar short, please correct me if I've got the timing and such wrong:

Saw them give an impromptu and what must have been their first performances at the EAC summer school in 2013, it was like telepathy they way they took a basic tune and developed it, the album will be amazing. they played us 5 tunes including Sam's gallons of cognac, Sylvia's Serenade and I think they did St Catherine also from Playford

There's now a band website, a CD on the way and a somewhat unpublicised smattering of gigs around the UK in December.

I might see if I can make it to the Northampton gig, as that's probably the most accessible venue for me. I'd complain about lots of acts not making it over to Wales but from the turnouts I've seen at gigs I can't blame them in the slightest (there were about 20 people for Faustus, and I knew about 10 of them :o)

Oo er... Need to find out about the Pewsey gig...
The first recording reminded me somewhat of something Scarlatti might have knocked out. V good stuff...

I have a spare ticket going for their Northampton gig (on Monday) if anyone's interested - free to a good home. It's in a round church in Northampton, so should be rather special (see Vivre thread). All I'd ask is that whoever takes the ticket is someone who wasn't planning to go anyway - perhaps you've never seen these guys play and don't know if you'll enjoy it. You will.

My copy of the CD arrived in this morning's post. I wonder what I might do this afternoon?  ;)

On the label web site is says "RELEASED 26TH JANUARY 2015 - NOW AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER"  - is this incorrect?  Can I get it now?

Apparently so ... I simply pre-ordered it, thinking that it would be despatched on the release date. I did think it a bit odd that there was an option to tick a Christmas gift box, though.

It doesn't disappoint ... wonderful, understated playing throughout, as you might expect. One to enjoy of an evening.

Not normally a huge fan of Andy Cutting (though I'm the first to admit he's a bit of a genius) but this sounds delicious. Ordered.

Saw Leveret in Northampton last night; what a great gig. They played acoustically in a circle in the middle of an incredible round church (a surprisingly warm church). If you can, go and get a ticket for one of the other gigs on this tour.

Think I recognised a couple of you in the crowd, but I spent the interval admiring the church and had to rush off afterwards :D
